Gotta Re-sign Jameis at This Point (1 Viewer)

Not for north of 20MM/year and a multi-year deal! Strong pass. Now if say he wants 15MM/year and a 3 year contract, I can support that. He had yet to show that he will be the LONG term answer, 5 year type of starting QB.
What do you think a starting QB costs? Even an average one?

It’s like some people want to stink. If you aren’t willing to spend more than $15M then your only option is to draft and start a rookie.

Sad thing is... That was probably the best I had seen Taysom play at QB. I told my wife that if he keeps playing like that then I could see Payton just rolling with him next year. Then the injury happened. What a year...
The Falcons are bad and Taysom owns them. Against even average defenses, he struggles. I agree I could have seen Payton doing that, but it would have been a bad decision.

The AnybodyButJameis crowd is going to be horrible to deal with for the next few years. Some of these guys would rather burn the whole thing down, than have JW or someone like JW be the Saints starter.

I have family from MS and one of them played ball with Chris Osgood at Ole Miss in the mid 1980s . Those types of fans essentially ran him off (he transferred to Texas A&M) for similar reasons.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

That act like there is a HUGE gap between Winston's performance and Taysoms. I think Winston edged out Taysom in preseason, then played mediocre but enough to win. Got hurt. Then Taysom came in played mediocre but enough to win till he got hurt. He looked good last night and had been playing with a foot and throwing hand injury for weeks on top of all the missing pieces on Off.

They set their contract value for a player and they stick with it. If a player thinks the Saints contract value is too low, like Mark Ingram, then the Saints let the player test the market. If the market value is a little higher than their value, sometimes they match it.
So which do you believe? Do they stick to their set contract value or do they change it based on the market. It can't be both. Either they change or they don't.

Before the season the main knock was Winston and Taysom turning the ball over. Both proved they can operate in a game plan and not throw interceptions/fumble. Winston will he back to the form he was for the start of camp. Taysom I'm not sure he can recover, he's older and it's a re-injury.

We may be able to get just south of $20million for Winston if we offer a long term deal, 5 year $19.5 average or so. I'd be comfortable with that. We would have been in the hunt for the #1 seed if Winston was healthy all year.

I could quibble and pick apart Taysom's stats, but I don't care about just stats when talking about our future QB. I care about what a guy shows that either says he can develop into an above-average QB or not.

Tayson is gonna be 32-years-old next season and he's still extremely limited in an offense he's been in for four years. Half-field reads, throwing behind receivers, missing deep passes. I admire that the guy can take off and run, and it's been fun to see that aspect of his game, but it's clear that's not a sustainable thing going forward. He's been heavily injury-prone since college, and he does not have the ability to become a good, pure pocket passer.

Jameis' injury was the kind that can be avoided going forward. There are countless pocket QBs who tore their ACL on fluky plays that never had issues again. But when a running QB like Taysom starts having numerous lower-body injuries, that doesn't just go away.

All this is moot, though. If Hill really has a lisfranc injury, he's done for a year anyway. It's Jameis, a rookie, or trade the farm for someone.

P.S. Taysom looking good against the Falcons is a meaningless barometer. He always looks good against them because their defense is uniquely terrible at stopping him.

yea, he wants to play here, hes not going anywhere unless the saints cant give him a fair deal, which they will.
I don't think people understand how much of a good financial move it would be to sign a starting QB with Winston's ability for 3 years $20M or so a year. Other teams are paying far more for comparable QBs. It'd be the opposite of the situation we had with Brees.

Heck, if Taysom Hill became the starter, he'd cost $20M a year per his contract.

It's a mess. 60+mil over the cap. We lost a few key players last year. We're going to have to lose a few to make it work this year. The real issue comes when we have to start paying a QB 30 or 40 mil a year. Unless we draft a QB it's either going to be this year or next year...we're going to have to pay a QB at some point.
We’re really not lol. Check Underhill’s article on it.

Last year was much worse. We will be fine and could easily re-tool and put together a super bowl caliber roster again.

Sean chose JW as the starter, and many, many fans still refused to "accept" reality. When TH returned from injury to fill in, I supported him overwhelmingly as did a lot of other people that agreed with Sean Payton on JW being the better QB. I put my trust in Sean and always support Saints players. We have people here that are in no way supportive of the better QB (according to Sean) being resigned.

Take that for what you will.
