Garrapolo to Saints-OP speculation (Mod edit) (3 Viewers)

Brees was much more of a gunslinger earlier in his career when the had a better arm. He took more deep shots and make riskier throws.

Agreed. Before the inevitable decline, Brees was an excellent deep ball passer here, and could work the midrange throws with a lot of accuracy and efficiency when the team needed or wanted to gain chunk yards in a hurry.

And of all the QBs we are talking about, Winston has the best arm and throws the best deep ball, which opens up the rest of the offense.

I think Winston is the best fit, and he will command the least money. Re-signing Winston now to multi year deal, Book and Bortles back up, and send Hill back to his joker role, seems like the smartest play to me.

But what do I know! LOL

If he is released and is a free agent, then I think this is a definite possibility. Payton liked Garoppolo in the draft. Garoppolo would easily fit our offense and, I think, would love to play for Payton. This makes more sense to me than re-signing Winston or making a trade for Wilson.

It makes more sense than trading for Wilson, but it does not make more sense than signing Winston. Winston is younger, has had an arguably better career, has much more upside, knows our offense already, and is already a good fit in the locker room. Winston makes the most sense of all the possible options, but Garoppolo is an option if Winston goes somewhere else.

Brees was essentially a game manager of CSP's offense that went for the jugular when it was clicking. He was the perfect fit for CSP's offense.
Not at all. Brees made the offense 5 times better because of his talent and leadership. Please understand what “game manager” means. It means you execute what the coach wants and don’t go off script and take fee chances. Brees was the mastermind along with Payton of the offense. There’s got to be a documentary or NFL films you can watch 🤷🏾‍♂️

Agreed...I kinda shiver when I hear people say we run a West Coast Offense, we really don't....we just had to shrink our field because our QB got old. Sean wants to get back to that downfield attack, otherwise he wouldn't have let Teddy B walk...because that short stuff is what Teddy excelled at.

Yep. There are some West Coast principles in the offense, mostly with the read progression, using the short passing game like a run game, and the zone blocking scheme, but all NFL offenses use some West Coast concepts now and Payton wants to get the ball deep much more often than the old West Coast offense of say Bill Walsh. What we do is probably closer to the original version run by Don Coryell which isn't what people think of as a West Coast offense anymore.

I think Payton also relies on creating one on one matchups where our guy has the advantage which is really part of a modern spread system. It's basically a truly multiple system with the only real base being a zone blocking scheme, attacking the defense at all levels in the passing game, and a RB that can catch.

I don't think that's what people mean by game manager. I think people mean a guy that protects the ball and doesn't take chances. Brees was not that when he was younger and in his prime. In his prime Brees took chances, but he usually successfully completed those chances and he knew when was the right time to take the chance and when was the right time to just throw it away or check down. As he got older, he didn't have the arm to take those chances so he became more of a game manager. But, prime Brees was a gunslinger. He just usually won his bets.

And Payton loves to be aggressive. He's the guy that called an onside kick in the middle of the Super Bowl.

His career completion percentage is near 68%, his career passer rating is near 99, he is 33-14 as a starter, and his TD to INT ratio is almost 2 to 1... If we are looking for a care taker to manage the offense while we run the ball and play defense... He fits that bill for sure.

All other considerations aside we as fans have no clue about in the real world (like money, future injury, or compensation).... I'd be interested in seeing him here under Sean's wing.

I think he's a better fit for this offense than either Taysom or JW as it stands today TBH.

Thank you. I don't know why people undersell him so much - maybe because he's such a pretty boy - but I think he'd be really successful in this offense.

Not sure what the infatuation with JimmyG is. He is just not very good, especially for the amount of money he has been paid. I saw Gillen on Fox8 beating his drum and someone in the T-P doing so as well (Duncan?). Is he any better than Winston? He is older and more highly paid.

Sean Payton will sign Jimmy “G” in free agency to quarterback the Saints. No draft picks to trade away and they are both Eastern Illinois alumni
This would be a good signing. The Niners announcers have disparaged him in the eternal quest to get Trey Lance going and have hurt his value. Many Bay Area sports reporters were willing to cash it in, bench Garappolo, and have their ideal QB win or lose. Trust me when I say that Garappolo is far better. Trey Lance is a symbol for the Niners that they have built up into Joe Montana. They will rue the day they dumped Garappolo.

He was 20TDs/12INTs throwing to a far better supporting cast than any Saints QB had this past season. In what way would it be a good signing?

Why can't we just roll with Winston and continue developing Book ? Book has game and was drafted for a reason. He played well for the Irish. Winston was doing ok for what he had to throw to. I think we should stick with what we have. If not Book then draft the kid from Pitt but still roll with Winston....I don't see a reason to bring in Jimmy G. The team already likes Winston and he knows our system, he will only get better.
