If the Bears hire Jeff Ireland as their new GM...should the Saints consider Mike Mayock for Director of Scouting? (1 Viewer)

When it comes to evaluating, Jeff is one the best if not arguably the best in the business. But there are so many factors that go into how teams make these decisions. Personally, I like having Jeff in New Orleans even though I know he wants to be the final voice on decisions.

On a somewhat related note, the Bears could make a major "surprise" hire that will shock if not shake up the league. That decision could come Friday. If not, then I think their goal will be to secure the Brown/Eberflus combination. If the major hire is made, I think the coaching choice will be Caldwell or Bowles. Maybe Leftwich, but definitely a minority candidate. I know they love Eberflus but I doubt they hire him if they make the surprise hire at GM.
Yeah, I'm a bit surprised we're not hearing Leftwich's name mentioned more. But, that could be due to some people thinking he's riding Brady's coattails to some degree.

No idea how he'd do as a HC.

I heard an interview that said Bill Polian is the Bears consultant, not sure if that is a pro or con for Ireland.

Quite honestly, I am not the biggest Leftwich fan and I cannot help to think that a lot of his success stems from having Brady. But I also think his name has not been mentioned a lot because he is considered the favorite to land in Jacksonville though Eberflus is also a finalist there. Byron is supposed to interview with Chicago but he wants to do so in-person. Thus far, all of the interviews have been virtual so they'll have to figure out the logistics. More than likely, he will have to do a virtual interview.

Yes, Polian is in the room on all meetings but that did not have an impact on the interview with Jeff. I will say that Polian is clearly a pro-Colts, anti-Patriots guy.

I’m hoping for one of two options both involving Loomis ascending to a Football President type position.
Give Ireland the GM job. Or if he leaves give Khai Harley the job.
ML ascending to a Football President type of position and handing Ireland the GM job is kind of what I expect to see happen eventually, maybe sooner if someone shows a serious interest in him.

Not so sure about making Kai Harley the GM. Perhaps create a position that is parallel to the GM, but which deals with financial matters. I don't know how good he is at the evaluation phase of things but we know he has inherited ML's genius in that area.

You don't need to be a personel evaluator to be a great General Manager. Certainly Mickey Loomis is not a scout and have not been one.

What a good General Manager needs is to surround him/herself with the the right people, to have greatly leadership skills and to be able to prepare people to advance in their careers, inside or outside of the organization.

Kai has experience working at the NFL offices, he has been great handling salary issues with the saints and is well known and respected around the league. I am surprise he has last so long with us.

No, you don't. But we've seen what can happen when that good talent evaluator is not here. The difference pre-Ireland is palpable. My point is that we should not get into that situation again, hence the parallel positions. If we make Kai the GM, then we still need that talent evaluator but with parallel positions we can have both.

That was my point.

That was Dez Bryant.

Are you insane? Let’s get the guy who could have had Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, Mac Jones but was like ‘nah man Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields is where the value is here”
Pace moved up one spot and gave the farm to the 49ers for Trubisky. Then the niners went to the Super Bowl

That very well could happen because Ryan Pace used to work for the Saints but what did he do good for the bears? He traded the farm to take Trubisky over Watson and Mahomes.
He did not make a very good GM but he was very good at what he did to the point he was poached from us and everybody on SR.com felt we were losing someone now that he failed he all of a sudden is radio active and cant be hired back to the player personnel department to replace a guy who flamed out as a GM in Ireland and was hired to our player personnel department and is now being poached again after gaining value for being apart of a stable organization. How soon we forget.

I think Pace's talent was in Pro-Player evaluation, not in College player evaluation. He was in charge of pro scouting in New Orleans and I think he was out of his depth having to do college scouting and making the final decisions with the Bears. On the other hand, he did a decent job in NFL free agency with the Bears and while here. I'd be happy to have Pace back in his old roll of head of pro scouting, but I don't want him involved in college player scouting and evaluation.
