Saints sign WR Kirk Merritt (4 Viewers)

Huge under the radar signing. CSP just signed the Saints' Deebo. I was wondering who CSP would sign away from another team's practice squad now that the season is over and those guys are just signed to futures contracts without having to go on the 53-man roster. Merritt is a bully ball type WR.

Merritt was at the top of 2020 WR class on athletic ability. He was there with Claypool, DPJ, Jefferson and Aiyuk. One of the big differences is Merritt ran a 4.33, whereas the rest were in the 4.42-4.48 range. Merritt's 20-yard shuttle was 4.02 and from what I was able to find, that was the quickest. CSP also seems to continue his collecting of WRs with hands larger than 10" since Merritt's are 10.25".

Height: 72"
Weight: 215lbs
RBS: 2.99lbs
Hand size: 10.25"
40-time: 4.33 sec
Vertical: 45"
Broad jump: 135"
20-yard shuttle: 4.02 sec
3-cone drill: n/a

That would be amazing, but I’m skeptical. Why hasn’t he done anything to this point if he’s the next Deebo? Or deserving of being in the same sentence as those others you listed?

If I’m reading his history right, he lacks consistent coaching. He went from Oregon to A&M to a community college to Arkansas, then didn’t get a combine invite and has been sitting on the dolphins practice squad for a couple of seasons behind some actually really good WRs. Maybe he needs a better situation on a WR needy team.
I’ll be rooting for the young man. Hopefully that’s it.

He absolutely deserves to be in the same sentence. It's not a question about his talent. He had off the field issues after transferring to TAMU ended up in JUCO where he dominated and his team won the JUCO championship, then he went to Arkansas St and dominated there as well. He went undrafted because off the field issues then signed on with the Dolphins who actually have a few decent WRs. He barely missed making the 53-man roster and still hung around for 2 seasons.

I hope he gets his off the field issues squared away then, and I’ll be pulling for him. I’d love to have a Deebo on this team, even tho I loathe him on the Niners.

Local kid now living his dream to play for the Saints. If he doesn't make it, can't imagine it will be from a lack of all-out effort.

Good luck, fellow Saints fan.

Dolphins fans were sad to see him leave, said he was open downfield when he got playing time, but they don't throw deep.

Great, I guess we don't have to worry about drafting a WR early. j/k

That could be the reality, but I’m choosing to be optimistic about a guy who hasn’t had a real chance in the NFL yet. Not all people are college material and he clearly struggled in that environment, but he hasn’t given up on football, so maybe that’s his real calling. Besides, these are exactly the kinds of players our team needs to bring in and develop because we have so little talent on offense and little resources to acquire it.
That last part gives me hope for this guy too. Our WR room is very weak.

I think his off the field issues have been squared away for years, now he's just looking for an fair opportunity. We know that CSP gives that opportunity. Lance Moore is a good example of a WR who went undrafted and spent a season on another team's practice squad.
