Drew Brees tweets 3 rule changes he wants the NFL to make (1 Viewer)

I disagree with all of that.

1. Yeah, lets make a subjective penalty even tougher to officiate. There are already too many subjective penalties in this game and QB protection is almost to point that they will all be wearing "no contact jerseys" on gameday.

2. Again, the last thing this league needs are more rules!!! You can't hit high already, now you want to make hitting low a penalty as well? How about this for a rule, when the QB throws a hospital ball to the WR, the QB gets flagged for roughing the WR.

3. College OT rules takes the game of football and turns into something else. No, leave overtime alone, it is fine the way it is today. Regardless who wins the toss, both teams has a chance to win the game. If the receiving team's QB comes in and pulls a Hasselbeck, then the kicking team would win the game without the offense playing a snap in OT.

All that to say that I am grateful that Brees isn't on the competition committee.

No please don’t go to the college rules. That is the worst possible option. My first choice is sudden death. If you lose the coin toss, play defense and get the ball back. If the rules must change, here’s my suggespotion. Play a full quarter Or at least a 10 minute quarter. That way you can’t say it’s unfair. Both teams will probably get multiple possession. It also puts it in line with the other sports—baseball plays full innings until there is a winner. Basketball plays a 5 minute OT period. And don’t talk about player safety…especially after adding mandatory Thursday games and a 17th game to the season.

And I don’t agree with the War thing because then it gets ridiculous like it is with quarterbacks. Might as well just play flag football.

Roughing the passer goes overboard too.

I don’t agree with any of that either. Already too many rules protecting QBs. DBs go low to avoid helmet to helmet. So now you’re able to aim to a specific area that is in constant motion? Just make it easier for big plays to happen huh?

And I don’t like bailing out defenses for not being able to stop an offense. Force a punt or a turnover. But if you’re going to do anything, make it a full quarter. And if it goes to double OT then that one should be sudden death.

On roughing the passer, the problem is every kind of illegal contact is worth 15 yards. It needs to be like it is for punters imo. Bad hit is worth 15 yards, not so bad is worth 5 yards.

When rules are implemented to penalize hits to the knees and head, the integrity of the game is compromised.
But then...
Again - no one wants a receiver, or any player, to get hurt.

One thing that compromises the integrity of the game, is having no players to field a competitive team because a bunch of them are out with concussions and torn ACL's.

But maybe I don't know what you mean by "integrity"...

Pass interference should 15 yards like college....end of story.

With overtime in postseason they should play a 10 minute quarter. Football only timed sport with such rules they have currently.

Could you imagine in basketball OT if first team to make 3 pointer wins. Or in baseball. Visiting team score run in extra inning and home team doesn't get to bat.

In regular season im fine with OT format. But for postseason with so much at stake it is woefully inadequate

NFL always seems to be behind the eight ball when it comes to rule changes. It always makes me wonder if it's on purpose.

I'm pretty sure what Brees is alluding to is QBs getting roughing penalties when there's nothing rough about the hits they take sometimes. It seems to me he wants to narrow the rules, not expand them.

It's pretty simple in the OT. Give both teams a minimum of 1 possession then sudden death at that point if it's still tied.

If you protect the receivers from knee down and neck up then there will be 10 penalties a game. The game is to fast for a DB to make a decision and if a receiver is in the air do you wait until they land to tackle them?
there are several of these 'intent to injure' types of penalties that should be taken out of ref's hands - if it's not a foul (does not effect the play) do not call it - let an independent panel review questionable incidents during the week and ban players from upcoming games if it's found that they intentionally or recklessly put other players in danger
the speed of the game is too fast for refs to try to analyze actual physics

You could fix a lot of the officiating critiques by just having a "sky judge" that is able to review EVERY play. If it's something that is egregious they just ring down and say "hey you guys missed that one/blew that let's fix it now".

They seem headed in this direction. I'd like it on site rather than it coming from NY tho. I don't know how much difference that would make, but it needs to be better than what we have currently.

I think pass interference that occurs on the opponent's side of the 50 should be spotted at mid field with an automatic 1st down, otherwise it should be a spot file.
I've sometimes wondered if it would make sense to apply the "half the distance to the goal" rule to pass interference, since it's applied to all other penalties. So if there was pass interference in the end zone on a pass from midfield, you'd get the ball not at the one, but at the 25.

I am not sure why pass interference can't be called by a team of say 3 box officials sitting in a booth with every camera angle available. If PI is called by refs on the field they need to confirm the call.

They can also call down to the field in the event of a non-call to call the penalty from the box. But they have only a certain time frame....until the next snap maybe. So they can't take forever to catch every single one....just really obvious missed calls.

Really....every penalty could be done this way. There would still be some misses, but this would probably help a lot.

The refs on the field would become less powerful. And if the NFL decides to hose a team, like they do with us, it will be a lot more obvious because the booth ref guys should eliminate a lot of that by calling stuff that we can clearly see on a quick replay before the next snap.

One word: control

The NFL is a power/money hungry monster and they will always do whatever is in their own best interests to keep and maintain their power. All the complicated rules are not for the purpose of player safety. They give the NFL the power to keep the refs sufficiently confused and feckless so that they are hesitant to make calls that should not be so difficult to make. The NFL has been ruining and continues to ruin the game of football to the point that it has become nearly unbearable to watch at times.
