Drew Brees tweets 3 rule changes he wants the NFL to make (1 Viewer)

They seem headed in this direction. I'd like it on site rather than it coming from NY tho. I don't know how much difference that would make, but it needs to be better than what we have currently.

Make every play reviewable/challengeable then have it sent to New York.

I like that it's centralized so in theory you would have consistency. You have the same set of eyeballs watching all games and applying the same criteria. Maybe even do a live feed from the New York office so it's transparent and you hear their reasoning in real time. That way you don't have all of these "the league has their thumb on the scale" gripes that everyone has.

Pass interference is my biggest issue. Would definitely top my list. Not just the whole no-call debacle. It's just too subjective while being the most game-changing penalty there is. That penalty can pretty much go as far as a QB can throw. I think a paneled review on a challenge is still a good option. But I wouldn't even mind maxing the penalty yards (like college) even if defenses could cheese it.

Same here. College does it way better. I've seen way too many games changed rewarding a bad throw with a 50 yard penalty, it is beyond ridiculous.....

College also does targeting better....

I've sometimes wondered if it would make sense to apply the "half the distance to the goal" rule to pass interference, since it's applied to all other penalties. So if there was pass interference in the end zone on a pass from midfield, you'd get the ball not at the one, but at the 25.
That's a good idea too. I like it.

Maybe have it like the NBA. Where a "clear path" pass interference where it's obvious they are grabbing the player because they are beat is a spot foul and the less egregious fouls are maxed at 15 yards. Your adding more subjectivity to it but it might be worth the trade off.

To those that want the DPI rule to change to the college 15yd penalty, how many times have you seen a college DB get beat by WR and then he just tackles him? Their penalty for DPI is not a deterrent from committing the penalty. I don't want to see that in the NFL.

See Complex Kid's post above. I think that would be a good compromise.

I did, and the problem with that is "adding more subjectivity to it" again putting the onus on the Refs, that's the same thing they tried with the facemask rule.

Then I'm not sure what more you can do without making it more subjective. Arguably, the college rule is less subjective than the NfL rules are.

I agree with everything except the WR rule. As a 5'9 185lb CB trying to tackle AJ Brown, DK Metcalf, Travis Kelce, or George Kittle coming at you full speed is suicide, your going to get trucked and in some cases end up the one that get concussed or something worse. What happened to Godwin(one of fav wrs) is unfortunate but what are you going to do? You go low you get a penalty, you go high you get a penalty, you screwed either way.
Agree 110%. There will be no way at the speed this game is played to hit a WR to break up a pass and not get flagged half the time. If you can't hit a WR at thigh level (like Godwin) and below, or neck level and above, and both the WR and the CB run 4.3, there will either be a flag festival or constant bias and controversy.

Alternatively, just make it two-hand touch. If the CB can two hand touch the WR before the WR secures the catch and takes 3 steps, it's incomplete.

Warning: viewership may decline.

There is nothing to do other than being consistent in the application of the current rules. Like I said before, the college rule doesn't offer up a deterrent to committing DPI when you're beat, the spot of the foul penalty hurts more, they just need to improve their consistency across the League.

I agree with him enough on the first two. OT, though? The league messed with it enough when they took the “sudden death” part out the equation after we made it to a Super Bowl under those old circumstances. Drew was the QB, as he should know 😉

there are several of these 'intent to injure' types of penalties that should be taken out of ref's hands - if it's not a foul (does not effect the play) do not call it - let an independent panel review questionable incidents during the week and ban players from upcoming games if it's found that they intentionally or recklessly put other players in danger
the speed of the game is too fast for refs to try to analyze actual physics
This is actually a really good point.

The Saints lost their starting QB for the season on a flagged personal foul. 15 yards and a few thousand bucks (for a multimillionaire) is nothing if it literally hobbles your only real competitor for the division title.

I'm not sure what the independent panel could do, but if they could order the Bucs' ownership to pay Gayle Benson the average salary for an NFL starting QB multiplied by games missed ($20M?), I bet Devin White would see some repercussions from his organization.
