Not Happy with Timing (2 Viewers)

This makes most sense. Most people his age no matter what they do dont want to do a restart in life
When he had that meeting about the future... Loomis was probably like... We probably can't fix the offense and get a top tier QB in the same offseason. Payton was probably exacerbated as an offensive coach at the thought of having to babysit another bad offense. It wasn't worth it to him. Loomis probably told him what Khai cap wizard was going to do to get us in a good spot. Payton wasn't satisfied with the answer.

That probably sums it up...

I would not be surprised to see Belichick do the same thing next season. When you coach a Hof QB and then have to rebuild, the scrutiny is so hard.
I think Belichick wants a Superbowl with a second QB. Basically lock in GOAT coach status with no questions if he could win without Brady.

Hard to believe that Belichick and Saban were the HC amd DC for a Browns team that went 36-44.

For sure but he was really checked out this year. I think he may be tiring too like Sean.

Payton told us why he left. It had nothing to do with Winston good or bad.

Payton told you what he wanted you to hear. That's the issue. He said he's basically burnt out.

Truth is, he didn't want to be here. Or else, he'd take temporary leave instead of flat out stepping down ("qutting" your job) can still be the term.

That's impossible to see now. But, the moment he takes another HC gig, and so earlier on into this retirement, you're gonna start asking, "then why did you even retire to begin with? You should've just take a temporarily leave for as long as you wanted instead of leaving us."

I think he will take another coaching gig by next season. That's what I feel

I'll be honest, I was hoping that Sean would have provided more structure to the team before leaving. Our offense has been left in total shambles, and we have no QB. We might get lucky with Jameis but probably not. Either way, I wish we were in a better position. This situation is challenging for me because my guess is this team will have 8-9 seasons for the next four years. I do wish Payton would have left in 2018. Would have let Brees and company do some amazing things without him. Just venting!
All of those factors are why Sean is "stepping away."

But he has earned the right to do what he wants. Perhaps going to another team down the road will recharge his batteries. Jobs get stale after 15 years.

I can't argue with that.

But, it's a slap in the face if that's your motive to go coach for another team.

At the very least, finish out your damn contract if that's your ultimate motive.

Whats the difference in Payton retiring and a Team firing their coach?

I look at it this way. Once you start thinking about leaving it is really hard to commit staying. I have gotten burned out working in place for too long and it gets even worse the more you think about it.

Could he have gone another year? Maybe... However, look at what Dennis Allen has Done with his Defense and the attention he was getting NFL wide. The chance of keeping him as your D coordinator is slim. Look at all the attention Kris Richard is getting as well. This gives you an opportunity to let him stay and take a promotion. Retaining good coaching talent is extremely important as we all know. With all o this in mind I think the timing is perfect from a continuity standpoint and you immediately jump in the pool for landing someone else like Brian Flores even if neither of those guys want the job.

I just think he was ready to step away from coaching right now and embrace a new challenge with a different team once the opportunity presents itself again.

The timing would've been far worse to have left just after the no-call game. Everything considered, his timing for stepping away wasn't too bad. The team's structure is better than 3/4 of the rest of the league. Guaranteed to have a few cap casualties, but that's every year. And I can't stress enough any team would have to give up multiple draft picks to the Saints to get him back into coaching before the end of 2024.

Cowherd said he has source that told him Payton is all in on TV.

I think he would be great for fox pregame. Terry and Jimmy are getting stale and not in touch with Today's NFL. I think Howie and Michael are great. Those three would be entertaining as well as insightful. No need for a fourth person.

This makes me question whether or not Payton believed in Winston as much as us fans did.

Because if he did, and he believes Winston will be elite, why the hell would he want to leave with everything in place?

A great defense, a QB you believed in.

Add an OL, TE, and WR, and you're good.
Maybe it’s actually a personal decision for him.

Dude has been through a lot. Being Goodells punchin balls for 15+ years including a one year suspension goes on your nerves

And then there is always the heartbroken feeling that he might not have overcome after Brees left.
He gave it a try this year, but I assume his job didn’t get any easier.

Adding the adversity he had to deal with this year, and suddenly its not about the millions of dollars in his contract or the actual state of the team.

It’s just a man close to his 60s who gave is life to a sport and a franchise, that has every right so get some stress relief and step away from that monumental pressure je had to live through for decades!

THANK YOU SEAN!

For a team that had its HOF QB retire a year ago, the cupboard is not bare. Loomis gets value from the cap more than anyone, but it's a high wire spreadsheet act .If you weren't prepared a year ago for major transitional years over multiple seasons - then you should surely be now.

Sean didn't walk away for football or team/player reasons. He left for the personal reasons which he explained in his press conference. Take the 90 minutes to listen to the press conference. It's on youtube. You'll see a man who found over the course of the past week that he was ready to take off his coaching suit of armor, and just enjoy life life a regular guy. Give himself space to see what his next opportunity might be, in media, football, or potentially true retirement. Some of you say he is burnt out. His telling you about the past season shows he was not burnt out. I saw it more as he's stepping away so he does not land in debilitating burnout, post 60 years old, with his whole identity being nothing more than the chasing of more football glory.

In the press conference, he shed his coaching skin, and reflected on important themes: 'leaving the place better than how he found it,' expressing a lot of personal love to his players and team management and ownership; 'reflecting on when he was a young coach and even when he had to break into coaching because he could not make it as a player; paying homage to the city and fanbase, reflecting on learning how special it was and how the Saints have always been bigger than just football to the fanbase; and, consciously healing his attitude toward the media the past few years.

It was beautiful. Peace to the man, no matter what.
