Saints Peter King thinks Saints HC job… is not a good spot. (1 Viewer)

This is for the "coveted" players that we have...they're trying to plant a seed that this is a crappy place to play so they can look to opt out to one of their preferred large markets
This is the dream for the Giants/Cowboys media types. Try to get some sort of bank run/shortselling mentality so Alvin Kamara winds up in NY if Saquon keeps getting injured, that kind of thing.

But in reality, there is data and a hard cap.

The Saints are middle of the pack age wise.

Unless you're going to circumvent the cap 90s Broncos and 9ers style, no team has "extra" money to throw at players.

Guy is telling the truth. Nobody wants to hear negative stuff about their team.....but other than overexaggerating about old players, everything he mentioned is true. Our cap situation, while it can be kicked down the road some more, is a significant issue. Ideally, you want to be in better position there so you don't run into problems like this past season when the cap decreased. 70 million over is double the next worse team.....with no real QB on the roster. That's not good, mane! The MT comment is also spot on. Did everybody forget the shirt show last year with him? At one point, I didn't think he would play another down for the Saints. That's still a possibility.

I get "defend your team" attitude, but he didn't really slam the Saints. His take is pretty accurate IMO.

I remember going to a pre-season game here in Houston about 15 years ago, Saints vs Texans. Peter King stated before the game he was picking the Texans to win the AFC championship that year.
First play from scrimmage, we busted a run for about 70 yards. It was a sign. Texans finished last in their division. They were a total embarrassment. Yeah, King is an expert on calling where a team is...

Except it’s not.

There isn’t a single job opening with as much talent as our team has. The cap situation is meaningless because of how we manage it. That’s an organizational philosophy and doesn’t change just because Payton left.

Not a good spot? I wouldn't say that because I'd like to think (hope) Payton has laid such a good foundation that we will be able to take punches and keep on moving ala franchises like NE, BAL, SF, PIT, etc now.

But I get what he's saying. Many think, and rightfully so, we are about to be in a transition period almost where we have to say goodbye to the Payton era but also move on to a new vision of the future. And he and others have every right if they aren't thrilled with the idea of us going for stability with DA while we go through this unique period in our franchise.

Only time will tell.

A new head coach or GM wants to put his stamp on the team. This leverages a public opinion logic that the old must be shed to get credit, otherwise you are winning with the old players. It also is in many cases a reality that the old players and draft picks were poor and this lack of production led to the new hire's insertion into the organization. In the Saints case, the GM will remain. The successful head coach retired with a winning record on a team decimated by injuries. To say the Saints head coaching position is not ideal is to see the opportunity from an insecure new head coach perspective who wants assets to take claim on the success (high or abundant draft picks and cap space and perversely roster spots to fill for those free agents and picks.) The Saints will have a mid round pick and multiple three's and a roster that over performed given the injuries. This team for multiple games at only its starting guard and center on offense. On defense we had most of our starters but did play without Oyenmata, Davenport, and Gardner Johnson for multiple games and lost depth due to cap constraints. The upcoming year will be better on the cap than last year but still bad by league standards. We do however have probowl level talent at RB, o line, wide receiver, defensive line, linebacker, corner, and in my opinion safety with Marcus Williams. Winston is a strong candidate to have an ideal fit to remain in New Orleans with his injury timing. The team overwhelmingly says keep the ship moving forward no major changes ride out some of the cap issues.

Was it meaningless last year?

And it's not an organizational philosophy.....it was an organizational necessity with an aging HOF QB. You kick into the "win now" mode until he hangs up his cleats. Without Drew and Sean, it would be reckless to continue to use the same approach.

And how many times in the history of the salary cap did a pandemic hit? As far as how far above the cap the Saints are, you have to understand how Loomis structures contracts. He intentionally has large roster bonuses and large jumps in 2nd years of contracts so that those amounts are available for restructure. So, while the number is huge, it is not like it is unmanageable.
