Saints "quietly" research Laurainitis and Jenkins (1 Viewer)

I'd like us to draft Sedrick Ellis also but I think we'd have to trade up to get him.

Not much without a stud DT, Safety, or CB. No one player will turn our D around. Willis and Ryans were studs their rookie years as ILB's. Didn't help their teams to winning records.

This is why I'm in favor of taking the BDPA at 10 and not taking a LB for "immediate impact."

Willis turned the 9er's D COMPLETELY around, what are you talkin about???

they just had absolutely no offense, that is why they didnt have a winning record..!!!

so ur saying u don't think that bringing a MLB who get 174 tackles a year wont change our defense?????? HAHAHAHAHAHAH

do u watch football

Stats don't lie... one thing about the combine it doesn't show you who the "football players" are... you get to see athletes... the 40 times and bench presses weigh more than heart and football IQ.

The heart of a champion is what we need on defense.. :9:

:plus-un2:

what would it take to jump Cincy at #9 to get the 8th draft pick in the event that Ellis is there at 8?

The 49'ners were 22nd in both rushing and pass defense. I hardly call that a turnaround. Willis was solid, and had some great individual performances. He gets a lot of tackles and showed that he can be a top MLB in this league. But he did not turn the defense around as you put it.

lol...Jenkins had a horrible game? First off you don't get "burned" when your in a goaline zone based formation. Secondly, other then that he gave up nothing else the rest of the night and LSU by and large threw nowhere near him because of how good his coverage was. He had a very solid game. Do you think CB's must have 3 INT's for TD's to quilify as a good game?

Exactly. Jenkins played very well and affirmed my belief that if we do take a CB in the first round, then he needs to be the guy. I think a lot of people get excited by interceptions and interceptions are good. But when you take a look at a guy like Nnamdi Asomugha who teams are unwilling to even throw at, you get as close as you possibly can get to a shutdown cornerback. Teams go into games against the Raiders looking to only work one side of the field and last night, LSU pretty much did the same thing against Jenkins.

Personally, being that we have so many glaring needs on def, I dont think we need to be jumping anyone! If at the 8th pick, Ellis, Phillips, Laurenitis, and Jenkins are on the board or 3 of the 4 are on the board, then they need to let the chips fall in place.

That is just my personal opinion. That said, it means nothing and i wont be anywhere near the war room.

We have nowhere near the defensive personel the 49ers or Texans have.

i can't say much for the 49ers but i do like the texans defense. they are an upcoming defense and will be a force to reckon with. i also say that because i am now in houston so i don't wnat to be jumped.

A 3rd round pick. A 2nd rounder gets us to #5 overall.

that's probably too high a price to pay considering all of the holes we need to fill, eh?

Moving up 2 spots, giving away a 3rd rounder is awfully steep

And I don't see us doing too much in free agency, based on Saints FO history

Regardless, I think we'll have a strong pick at 10 - I just wish we could get a DT to start work from the trench back on our defense

Well it depends on the situation of course.

You know if the Saints, when they get into the evaluation process, don't evaluate many LBs or CBs as being worth the #10 overall pick and you're sitting there and Sedrick Ellis is the only defensive player on the board you really want to take there, moving up a couple of spots to secure him might not be such a bad idea.

Remember we traded a 3rd round pick to move up 3 spots to take Jammal Brown at #13 and, by and large, that move's paid off. So it's worth it if you do it strategically.

That said, given the option of having to move up to #8 to get a player that's "worth the pick" as opposed to simply moving back until the grade of the players left on your board matches your pick and collecting extra choices, i'd trade back.

But trades always require a willing partner too, so

i will take 18 tackles in a game any day over what our LB's do

Exactly! I know its only college BUT he got what, a third of what Sim got at MLB all year in one night? For a pro starter his numbers were unbelievably poor. It is time for a young hungry lion to take over in the middle.

I haven't done any research, but if the caliber of teams that Dan Conner played at PSU is the same as Laurinaitis played at OSU, then Conner deserves some thought here.

Give me Rey Mauluaga ?sp? or Keith Rivers out of SC and im stoked!!! Id rather have either of these 2 over Ellis, Jenkins, Connor, Laurinitis or Phillips....

After seeing CargoJon's post, that's exactly my thinking also.
