Dorsey’s Knee Could Affect Draft Status
By Thayer Evans

Tags: Adrian Peterson, chop block, Gil Brandt, Glenn Dorsey, N.F.L. draft

NEW ORLEANS — While the senior Louisiana State defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey is seemingly the front-runner to be the first overall pick in April’s N.F.L. draft, his stock could be impacted by a right knee injury that he sustained earlier this season.

The 6-foot-2, 303-pound Dorsey strained the knee during an Oct. 20 game against Auburn after enduring a chop block and was hampered by it the rest of the season. Yet he still won Nagurski Award, Lombardi Award, Outland Trophy and Lott Award this season.

Gil Brandt, the former Dallas Cowboys executive and an analyst for nfl.com, said he expected Dorsey’s knee to be heavily scrutinized by N.F.L. team doctors at the N.F.L. combine in February.

Brandt becomes yet another analyst who believes Dorsey may slide. I have had this feeling for a while and started to notice other prominent scouts and analysts suggest the same. Who knows in the end? But I think there's a possibility.

Consider that Miami runs a 3-4. Unless they plan to play Dorsey at end, they could take Chris Long (Howie's son). The Rams are on the board next and they struggled this year once they had so many injuries to their offensive line. Pace is not getting any younger so Jake Long could be the pick. Okay, let's assume that the Raiders win the toss for the #3 pick. There's no way that Al Davis passes on McFadden. At pick #4, I think the Falcons would select Matt Ryan (despite Falcons fans feelings on the matter) because they are looking to move on from the Michael Vick era. At #5, the Chiefs are in need of serious help on the offensive line if they want to see Larry Johnson play like the Johnson we had seen the previous two seasons. Ryan Clady could be the pick at #5. The Jets, another team that runs a 3-4 are up at #6 and could opt to take Vernon Gholston. The Patriots are at #7 and James Laurinaitis or Malcolm Jenkins could be the pick there. Both would fill a need so they could go with either.

It is at the Ravens pick that things would get intriguing. Obviously, the Ravens have no need for Dorsey. If the Pats were to take Laurinaitis, the Ravens are looking at a choice of Jenkins or a QB like Andre Woodson. But I think the Ravens could also be a strong trade possibility. We are #10 and could offer a third or fourth to move up. I think they would be willing to do it if only to burn Cincy who would be elated to have Dorsey fall to them at #9. Also, consider that if the Ravens move back, they are still likely to land the QB of their choice or Jenkins. Why? Because of the Saints moved up to #8 to take Dorsey, Cincy would likely to take Sedrick Ellis and the Ravens would still have a chance to grab either Woodson or Jenkins.

Also, there are some scouts who feel that Ellis is better than Dorsey and could end up jumping him by the time draft arrives. I KNOW THAT ALL OF THIS SEEMS A LITTLE FARFETCHED RIGHT NOW. But you cannot argue with the logic I presented and you have to also believe that where there is smoke, there is fire. Given that so many scouts have addressed the subject of Dorsey sliding, it could end up happening. Of course, Dorsey could wow teams in his interview, have an unbelievable performance at his personal workout and solidify his spot as a top 3 pick.

It's hard to see him sliding past the #2 pick....teams would be making the deals to trade up to get him, IMHO.

It's a long time till April. Remember Brady Quinn was supposed to be a top 3 pick as well.

Let Dorsey slid to #10, please.

Again, guys, I know it seems a bit farfetched, particularly right now with the thought being that he would be the top pick. But I think there's a lot of credence to the concern about Dorsey's knee and the possibility of him being surpassed by Ellis. I mean, let's go back to Ricky Williams and remember that Edgerrin James ended up passing him up on a lot of draft boards. While it may not seem likely, anything could happen. There are always draft day surprises and there are always guys who rise and guys who fall.

:scared:

:ezbill:

If Payton would pass on GD at #10 I will personally pimp-slap him if/when I see hm in person...

It's funny, I thought about that after reading the story and writing the above scenarios. I thought, what happens if the Saints do not move up but stay at #10. And the Ravens go with Woodson and the Bengals opt for Ellis. And we have Dorsey on the board and everyone in New Orleans is screaming for Dorsey and we take Jenkins. While Jenkins is an outstanding prospect and a guy I like a lot, I just would lose it if we passed on Dorsey unless we signed Albert Haynesworth or Corey Williams or, even, Shaun Rogers (since I could see him being released by the Lions this off-season). And even then, I might think it's a bit crazy but it would be at least justifiable.

Dude even if we get one of those guys in FA... you know how the FO drafts for "best player available"... and if their BPA is not Dorsey then I would forever give up on our FO in the draft...

If it happens, I have my doubts, the Saints are actually in the spot to move up and grab him. I don't think Loomis would have any problem swapping with either the Ravens or Pats for Dorsey. Neither team needs a DT so they could swap down, pick up a second day pick, and still get the guy they were targeting. Hopefully if his knee checks out the Saints FO is prepared for this scenario......

There's no way the Saints would spend a 1st round pick on a guy with a pre-existing knee injury! ...NO WAY.

;)

He won't sniff anywhere near the #10 pick. Something would have to seriously go wrong for him.

Crazy scenarios would have to work themselves out, maybe something like this:

Dolphins: DE/LB Chris Long
Rams: LT Jake Long
Raiders: RB Darren McFadden
Falcons: QB Matt Ryan
Chiefs: LT Ryan Clady
Jets: DE/LB Vernon Gholston
Patriots: Trade down likely with Dorsey still here or LB James Laurenitis or DB Malcolm Jenkins
Ravens: Trade down with a team like the Saints likely with Dorsey still here. Or an offensive player.
Bengals: Probably would take Ellis or Dorsey.
Saints: Leftovers.

Even if his knee didn't check out, we could take him; sign him, and then give him a sort of "red-shirt" year where he would be on the team but inactive all season.

Stranger things have happened.
