You read about all the coaching job openings and it's always some team interviewing some other team's coordinators/assistant coaches with the other team's permission. Why would you give your coordinator permission to move on to another team? Is that only a rule during the season and the coaches can interview all they want in the offseason? Pretend for a second that the Saints have a really good coordinator. ( I know, haha, but try) The Falcons obviously have no coach, and want to interview our up and coming coordinator. Why would we grant permission for him to interview and go to the enemy? Can someone explain this to me? Why not just deny every team permission to interview your guy and keep him?

Because its not right to hold a man down from getting a promotion and fulfilling his dream. All these coaches are in the NFL for the same goal...They all want to win a Super Bowl as a head coach.

Its almost an unwritten rule to allow your assistants to interview for possible promotions unless it presents a significant conflict of interest like if its a divisional rival. And even then they usually will let.

Because when you deny a person the right to further succeed, you are an a**. Then people who do a good job do not go work for you because they know they will never move up. Also, do you really want to keep people who would rather be elsewhere? They then do a bad job, just to get out.

You have zero to gain by keeping the clamps on another human being. Basic rule of business. The best way to keep the best people is to reward them better than the other guy would.

No, it's not. Teams regularly deny permission because they simply want to hold onto the assistant. Dallas prevented Sparano from leaving for New Orleans with Sean Payton, Tampa kept Rod Marinelli as a virtual prisoner for the longest, etc.

You allow an assistant to interview because
1) It allows you to attract better assistants. If you regularly stand in their way, the best ones will shy away from you (unless your name is Bill Parcells in which case you can get away with it)

2) An unhappy assistant may potentially be an ineffective assistant

If I am not mistaken, permission is only needed for a lateral or lower move. I think the league mandates that permission is not required when the move allows a coach to obtain a higher position.

Thus the ability to go from coordinator to head coach, without needing permission.

I think the poster is talking about coaches interviewing for head coaching vacancies.

This is pretty much the way I understand it as well... if it is an equal or lesser position, permission is needed, if it is a promotion, even the popular "assistant Head Coach" title, than Permission is not needed.

So...

Assistant to Assistant = Permission Needed

Assistant to Coordinator/Head Coach/Assistant-Head Coach = No Permission needed.

Something along these lines happened back when Haslett was our assistant Coach LBers?) and Monte Kiffin was our Defensive Coordinator... The Bucs wanted Haslett to be their Coordinator (in hind-site maybe we should have let him go), the deal was basically done and the Saints said wait, how about you take Kiffin (the "Older" coordinator) and we promote Haslett (Young Wipper-snapper) to the Defensive Coordinator position. The Bucs took Kiffin in a kind of Coach trade, but not a real trade...

In which case it's still not an "unwritten rule" as you can't block an assistant from interviewing for a Head Coaching job even if you wanted too.

Actually the rule was tweaked slightly. Not needing permission only applies to head coaching spots.. A "promotion" to a coordinator spot would need permission if the person is currently under contract.

Parcells specifically talked about that last year during the Dallas/NO game timeframe. Since teams can be creative with titles like "Assistant Head Coach" they were manipulating the system to make it look like it was a promotion. That prompted the switch.

Assistant coaches in the playoffs require permission. This is what the poster is talking about because he says he is reading stories about coaches needing permission to interview for head coach jobs (Jason Garrett, Mike Smith, etc.). You can indeed block him from interviewing if you wanted to.

Yeah - the Redskins were the worst abusers of this loophole. They got Greg Williams from Buffalo and later Al Saunders from Kansas City in what amounted to lateral moves (coordinator to coordinator) but they dressed it up by giving them the title "Assistant head coach"
