Anytime an aircraft crashes it's a tragedy and concern. When the aircraft is one that US carriers operate, especially an American-made aircraft, it is of high importance to us here in EE. Hopefully we can discover what happened.

The plane, carrying 132, fell from 29K feet rapidly and surveillance cam footage (not posted here for several reasons) shows the airplane falling to the ground in a straight nosedive.

I just recently watched Downfall on Netflix and that news aint helping me feel all warm and fuzzy about their 737-800/Max 8 series.

Has to be some sort of mechanical failure if the plane is in a full nosedive, no? I mean even with engine failure from 29k ft you can glide ( somewhat - im sure you haveto pitch the nose down to get air speed then level off - repeat )

ugh.

Didn't the 737 MAX have similar nosediving issues?

I don't know if it was 'similar', I'm suspecting it's not similar. But yes, the MAX had a problem where the computerized flight system was diagnosing stall, and attempting to correct it by nosing down . . . but the planes weren't in stall and the pilots then had to fight the system that was nosing the plane down.

I think those MAX crashes happened after take-off, whereas this failure happened an hour into the flight at altitude. I think @MLU and @staphory usually have good aviation info, others too, I forget who.

Without posting, the video @superchuck500 referenced, the plane is perpendicular to ground.

The Downfall doc on Netflix had flight sims and the crashes seem to be more of an "angular" crash - like 45 degrees or so .

there is no "angle " - its straight down.

I don't know if it's an accurate suggestion, but I wonder if the failure of the tail might cause a catastrophic nosedive. I recall that happening to an aircraft in the US several years ago, although I'm not recalling if it was a 737 or some other aircraft.

Geez! Woke up this morning before my morning flight and seen this news, I didn’t read, knew I shouldn’t have clicked this thread.

Has there ever been a nosedive from so high up (cruising altitude) due to mechanical/weather? I’ve always been told near impossible, this almost sounds like pilot error unless those Max have another bug.

This was 737-800, not a MAX.

I think right now you can presume this is something peculiar to this flight or possibly to how the airline manages this airplane. But those 800 series have been flying for decades in the US.

The MAX system was new.

I posted in the "what are you watching" thread that I watched this and my blood was boiling.

Who knows but there are other reasons a plane might nosedive into the earth from 29K feet that don’t involve a problem with the airplane itself.

Right. I haven't read up on this. Has terrorism been ruled out yet?

Yeah i didnt want to speculate in the first post about some intentional act. First thing brain wants to go to is some sort of mechanical failure because outside of that, my mind cannot wrap around any sort of "intentional act".

I haven’t seen anything about analysis- I don’t think anything has been ruled out (at least in public info).
