Not to be superstitious, but I've just had a thought. Back in the year 2000, after the Saints finished the previous year at 3-13, they hired Jim Haslett. After defying the massive odds from NFL experts to be successful, they finish 10-6, thus winning the division crown. They would wind up winning a playoff game and earn Haslett the Coach of the Year honors. High optimism and excitement would follow the next season, which ended 7-9. Fast forward to the year 2006. After the Saints finished the previous year at 3-13, they hired Sean Payton. After defying the massive odds from NFL experts to be successful, they finish 10-6, thus winning the division crown. They would wind up winning a playoff game and earn Payton the Coach of the Year honors. High optimism and excitement would follow the next season, which ended 7-9. I don't know if this topic was discussed already because I don't have time to search all of the forum archives. But I just think that it is a weird coincidence.

**** happens. As long as we are in a run to make the playoffs this year it will remove the Haslett comparison. Now if we don't make it then I think people will be calling for his head.

Also, no one ever mentioned the stubbornness of both Haslette and Payton, continuing to play certain players, even though it was obvious they were hurting the team. Nor any mentione of holding out a high draft pick wide receive, the entire season, even though the fans were screaming for them to be activated at least one game (Devery/Meachum).

The difference is we are in better shape as a team on a hole. We have a strong offensive line, we have some young and up and coming players on offense. I also don't remember Haslett and Co. as expressive about fixing what was wrong as Payton has been this offseason. Lets give the coach one more season before we start comparing him to Haslett.

Actually, as much as the similarities seam earyily familiar, there is one overwhelming difference:

Haslette + Brooks = Regression
Payton + Brees = Progression

One problem seems to haunt both coaches......the defense was Haslet's downfall, the offense even with Brooks was putting up points, but the D was giving it away faster that they could score!

Same with Payton's D.......both coaches have a very questionable DC....Venturi was clueless, and Gibbs seems that way too! And the D is outright garbage! This could be Payton's downfall also.....

As an owner, I'd hate to be Benson. Saints fans aren't the only one's who've noticed this. To me,it's just a question of when the organization gets tired of failure due to stubborness which appears as incompetence.If the people calling the shots continue to botch calls,replace them. 5-6 yrs to remove Haslett(former linebacker) who NEVER had a quality LB!, if Payton can't get it together,...GOTTA GO!

Ha, you said "a hole." Butt seriously, the Haslett comparisons are a bit premature. It took at least a few seasons for the bleach to soak into Haslett's skull.
