Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Meat and milk from animals bred by cloning would be safe to eat, European Union officials said in a report that follows similar findings in the U.S. and may bring such foods closer to market.

No differences in nutritional value have been seen between products from cloned animals and those bred conventionally, the European Food Safety Authority said today in a draft opinion published on its Web site. The agency will take comments on the opinion through Feb. 25.

Cloned food has been controversial. A U.S. government proposal to allow sale of such products drew about 30,500 comments from the public, prompting calls from lawmakers for more study. The EU food safety officials said studies of nutrition, toxicity, allergic reactions and environmental effects have turned up no cause for concern.

So if I eat steaks from cloned cows, theoretically, they will all taste exactly the same? I can't wait until we can clone our pets so we can have the same pet over and over and over again. Imagine, you could have Rover, Rover 2, Rover 3 etc. etc.

Imagine all the laced AGH (animal growth hormones :hihi: ) these "creatures" will have. Before long, they'll have us believing a strict diet of HGH shots 5 times a day will be good for you.

I really don't like the direction this is going. I can't wait to get my property and grow my own NON GMO veggies.

No kidding. The FDA banned milk producers from telling us if their products contained "No rBGH". How the government stands up for industry over consumers is mind boggling. Republican you say? Think again. I'm pretty sure this happened during the corporate Clinton era. It's really ridiculous the way they take us for a ride.

So will cloned meat vs. non-cloned meat be labled or will the government determine that in order for the products to be introduced to the market, they don't have to tell you or will require that they not tell you?

Freedom of speech. Yeah, boy, just watch what you say.

Last I read they will not have to label cloned meat since the FDA has decided there is no difference in the meat.

Every steak tasting exactly the same. Great, now coming to the best steakhouses in town........McSteakhouse. Exactly the same all the time. All in the interest of the dollar. Time to buy my own farm.

You don't need to add hormones to the animal to get it cloned. There is absolutely NO DIFFERENCE in it chemically.

To make a cloned animal all you have to do is essentially "slice" the zygote in half and let each grow. YES chemicals are used at the process BUT you can NOT detect those chemicals once the animal grows up. What this does is reduce the interbreeding that normally would be used to get a certain trait. This cuts time off of developing a new "variety "of cow. Instead of generations of cows you do it in one.

Most people have a problem with this because we are playing God but latch on to the hormone/chemical thing to try to have a scientific reason why. As a biologist...this worrying over cloned animals as food is comical. You can still have "organic" or "free range" beef from a cloned animal. (no hormones to grow) Stop thinking of cloning as a method of growing but instead of as a method of conception..

This statement is why there will be millions of people that just don't think its safe to eat, even though you and I know there is no difference between a cloned animal and animals that are identical twins. More steak for me, yippee!

Hopefully they will have to label it and all the people with ethical problems will stay away from it, causing it to be cheaper for those of us that don't care.

No I want my share of the cloned cows too, so you have to share...:hihi:

Way I figure if there is no demand for it, it should be cheaper and a better quality. While everyone else is eating the antibiotic normal cows, I will be eating the cows from that one supercow that is immune to diseases, has a feed conversion ratio that allows him to grow quicker and he tastes better too.

next step...genetically engineering catfish to taste like Speckled trout or something a bit better. Hell lets just get them to have a preseasoned taste....say dill and lemon. I will be first in line to try them out.

/its theoretically possible..and sorta has been proven possible by inserting jellyfish genes in plants.

Yeah, I love the transgenic mice that glow under a black light because of the scorpion genes in them.

Great! We can kill the same animals over and over!

Well maybe we can genetically alter them to not feel pain and enjoy being raised for food, like the shmoo from Lil Abner

I agree. Worrying over horizontal gene transfer from the food we eat is equally comical.

Also, the Europeans are WAY more paranoid about this stuff than we are, and if THEY deem it safe, then....
