Question Do we think Sean Payton was holding us back? (1 Viewer)

There were plenty of “fans” that thought Brees was holding the team back his last 2 or 3 seasons. The Payton and Brees era spawned a whole generation of spoiled fans with totally unrealistic expectations
Got to disagree with you on unrealistic expectations. With HOF Drew Brees we should have more than one Championship. Loved the early Sean Payton that was hungry and grounded.

I'm scratching my head on this thread.

Yes, Payton and Loomis laid a few eggs in going for free agents. The worst (IMO) was Brandon Browner. :covri:

Even so, Sean Payton has led us to a franchise reputation that is known league-wide to be a WINNING program. I only imagine how much of a dynasty if we had a middle-of-the-pack defense for all those years we had Drew Brees.

We have a Lombardi trophy, and he (CSP) turned over a team (to the new coach) in the BEST shape of any team in Saints' history. Just think back on the state of the team when Bum Phillips, Mora, Ditka, Haslett... all the way back to Tom Fears in the 1960's- - - handed the keys over to the next coach.

A lot has happened since Sean Payton arrived in New Orleans (post-Katrina), and he stuck it out. Worst season he ever coached with the Saints was 1-game under .500. That's impressive!

So glad we have the pride rekindled in the WhoDat Nation, thanks to Sean Payton. He kept striving to improve the team, and Dennis Allen can carry the team to the next level.

:gosaints:
Jarius Byrd disagrees with that statement

So we're not fans because we saw that he could only throw the ball 15 yards downfield? We made it work in spite of that LIMFAC

Lack of WR talent in recent years. Being stubborn with playcalling. Wanting a Seattle style defense and accumulating the wrong talent to get it. Getting in the commish’s doghouse many times (Goodell clown shirt in press conferences).

SP is an elite coach, but he did hold us back in some areas. I love the man, but I will critique him when I deem it necessary. It’s fine, no one is perfect

This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Held us back in some areas while making us the winningest franchise over the past 5 seasons with an aging QB who missed 5 games per season, salary cap hell and still 2 odd losses away from Superbowl 2 and 3.

My wife is 53 years old. When she was in her 20s she was as hot as hot ever gets. Your complaint against Payton is akin to me at 54 and chubby with grey hair complaining that she doesn't look as good in a thong as she did 25 years ago.

Only a seriously warped perspective could side with your argument.

Hold us back?

He raised us and our region up.

Prisoners of the moment. They like the way the off-season is going so by comparison they have to take away from someone to justify their approval. Payton is the new M. Williams or Trautman.
I agree but we can't get caught up in the offseason, that's what makes the question sad. DA is unproven as an HC, Winston still needs to do it for a whole season, and we don't know how the team will respond if we go through a tough patch. Keeping a team in the hunt for 15 years is something most coaches cannot do. Many of us were disappointed by how our seasons ended Drew's last few years but I'm not sure what else he could have done.

Im just happy N.O saw/acknowledged a huge problem and solved it resoundingly. Not going to blame Payton

It probably safe to say this years roster is better than than the 18-20 ones.

I also think the offense will be better under Winston

Brees did the best with what he had.

Comparing your wife on a superficial level with coaching is a huge reach and I’m being generous with you.
