With the recent acquisitions, 2022 reminds me of 2009 in the diversity of skill sets and depth.
I did a side by side comparison of the rosters. I was surprised how competitive the 2022 lineup seemed compared to the Saints' Superbowl year.
What do you think are the biggest advantages on each side? Do you think Loomis is trying to rebuild the Superbowl winning model?

Holy mackerel I had no clue that Adrian Arrington was actually part of that team lol.

I really think Jameis is going to do well. But obviously that’s the biggest edge to ‘09: Prime Brees over an injured/unknown Jameis.

Weapons seem to be a wash, mostly bc of the huge gap at TE.

Edge to 2009 OL by a decent margin.

Huge edge to 2022 at pretty much every level of defense.

Should be fun.

crazy how so many of 09 are way better. i would take deverey in the super bowl season over Olave any day, and say as Lance Moore over Landry. I'd take Colston over Mike Thomas until Thomas wins a SB. Also, Will Smith in his prime is better than Cam Jordan in his prime. But Cam has longevitiy over Will.

2009 Drew Brees in his prime
2022 Not Drew Brees in his prime

That’s the most significant difference. But I’m hopeful Winston can be a worthy successor.

I do have a few minor quibbles. I’m not ready yet to hand over Devery’s starting spot to Olave. I think very highly of Devery Henderson. We’ll see if Olave can live up to his billing, but he’ll need to if he’s gonna take Devery’s spot.

Goodwin vs McCoy is a push for me.

And I most certainly would take Dave Thomas over Adam Trautman.

I was with you until you said Mike Thomas needs to win a Superbowl before he gets the crown over Colston. There’s absolutely no way Marques Colston could pull off the season MT had in 2019. And by your standard, no one on the 2022 roster would be ranked higher than any of the ‘09 players. I’m not sure that’s fair.

And I love Will Smith. He’s the second-best DE in Saints history. But for various reasons, his production was inconsistent. Cam Jordan is solidly & unquestionably #1 all-time.

this season definitely has more potential than i thought back in february.

i can see similarities, even with the season before, 2008 saints had a lot of close games, 2021 saints did also, i think the injuries caught up in most of the games. like the 4th quarter blown leads.

2008
lost 6 games by a total of 16 points, 2 blowouts. finish 8-8.

2021
lost 2 games with roster decimated by covid (panthers/dolphins), blew 2 double digit leads in the 4th (likely due to injuries and lack of depth), plus 2 games due to kickers. then 2 other blowouts. finish 9-8.

Great post. Enjoyed looking down that mighty 2009 roster with lots of fond memories. What a great O'line that was a big key and oftentimes forgotten. As well as the turnover differential that we had and that was finally in our favor for a change. Guess coaching staff comparable should not be overlooked as well. To take it one step further, it would be interesting to modernize this to compare our 2022 Saints roster vs this year's Bucs (for the NFC South title) and vs the current SB Champions (Rams) to see how we stack for a Super Bowl run in the fall (which I def think is possible). We all know turnovers, penalties, and injuries are vital too, but when you line up players vs players, I think we stack up very well vs anybody. Time will tell.

Thanks OP for posting something interesting and original in a sea of uninteresting and repetitive opinions. It's an interesting thought experiment. (y)

You could add in coaches, and add weights to the importance of each position (clearly QB and coach carry more weight than most any other position) and that would be even better.

I think a big part of 09 was Coach Payton had a killer mentality, we would take a deep shot on every series. The last few years it was ball control and punt play D. Coach Allen seems to have that old Coach Payton mentality put your foot on their throat and never let up. I think 22 will look a lot like 09. I can remember a commentators talking about Kamara's choice rout and no LB could play it in 2018 and on thanksgiving day he stopped running it and we didn't see much of it again. This is the mentality that I am talking about.
