Obama and Hillary mixing it up as candidates is fun...throw in Bill Clinton and Black Entertainment Television (BET) and you've got the makings of a real knock-down-drag-out. :9:

Bill Clinton cites 'list of 80 attacks' from Obama camp
January 14, 2008

(CNN) -- Former President Clinton has "a list of 80 attacks" from Sen. Barack Obama on rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, he said Monday in the latest in the back-and-forth between the two Democratic presidential campaigns.

"I've got before me a list of 80 attacks on Hillary that are quite personal by Sen. Obama and his campaign going back six months that I've had pulled," he said, speaking to CNN contributor Roland Martin on WVON-AM's "The Roland S. Martin Show" based in Chicago, Illinois.

On the program, Martin played a recording of comments Sunday by Black Entertainment Television founder Bob Johnson that appeared to criticize Obama's admitted past drug use.

Johnson later said he was referring to Obama's community organizing efforts.

"When you listen to that tone and the inflection, he was not talking about community organizing. It seemed to be very clear what he was implying," Martin said.

The former president said Johnson needs to be "taken at his word," adding that "nobody knew" what he would say and "it wasn't part of any planned strategy." Video Watch Martin's take on the interview »

"This, to me, is another example of [the Obama campaign] wanting a double standard," he said

Race, gender are issues in tense day for Dems
Obama, Clinton thrust into debates that transcend their candidacies
January 14, 2008

LAS VEGAS - After staying on the sidelines in the first year of the campaign, race and to a lesser extent gender have burst into the forefront of the Democratic presidential contest, thrusting Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton into the middle of a sharp-edged social and political debate that transcends their candidacies.

In a tense day of exchanges by the candidates and their supporters, Mrs. Clinton suggested on Sunday that Mr. Obama’s campaign, in an effort to inject race into the contest, distorted remarks she had made about the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Mr. Obama tartly dismissed Mrs. Clinton’s suggestion, adding that “the notion that somehow this is our doing is ludicrous.”

this is all media talk - personally ive heard less attacks this election than most and none of it is really that bad - when you avoid talking specifics on policy etc you are left with nothing else to discuss over the course of 2 yrs than he said, she said.

Change!!

Personally, I think this tactic is less about black voters and more about Latinos and the working class white rank-and-file Democrats. A black person can't win as the black candidate. No minority can win as the candidate that represents their minority group. If they can successfully box him in, or are successful at driving up his negatives, they will seriously damage him.

They have a history in this campaign, however, of going too far. The Sheehan comment followed by Mark Penn's "cocaine" comment damaged Clinton.

Back to Hispanics, I think there is a feeling that they will not vote for a black person and especially someone who they are constantly reminded is black. That is huge in states like California and Texas.

Robert Johnson is gonna do the damage this time around. His remarks were slimy and bush-league. I imagine there'll be some backlash over that.

Johnson wants to create a buzz to make BET the clearinghouse, forum and defacto representative of the interests of black voters.

Oh, he wants to make lots of money too. NTTAWT.

Is he still involved with BET? I know that Viacom is the parent company and a woman is now CEO.

In a "Bill Gates retiring from Microsoft" kinda way. :mwink:

Estimated worth: $1.1 billion, second only to Oprah Winfrey among African Americans.

This happens every election. The day after a nominee is decided, the losers will all step into line about how great that person is and all video and transcripts of these fights will mysteriously disappear.

There's simply not enough muckraking Fox News on the EE Board today! :hihi:

Clinton, Obama Rhetoric Heats Up in Controversy Over MLK’s Role in Race Rights Fight
by FOXNews.com
Sunday, January 13, 2008

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton bashed rival Barack Obama on Sunday, suggesting that the black senator from Illinois was trying to prolong a race controversy that bubbled up after Clinton last week said it took a president like Lyndon Johnson to enact the vision presented by race rights fighter Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President Lyndon Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” Clinton told FOX News last week in remarks that sparked the current conflict. “It took a president to get it done.”

On Sunday, Clinton complained that Obama has been misrepresenting her words and their meaning. She said Obama has been comparing himself to King and President John F. Kennedy, who began the process that led to landmark civil rights legislation. But unlike King, who Clinton noted had marched, organized, protested, and was gassed, beaten and jailed, Obama is merely giving speeches about his commitment to racial equality.

Agreed. Romney seems to be the only guy running a good old fashioned shoot'em up campaign. Every one else are playing kind of ticky-tack.

Correct. The zeal to select and elect a winner will make pals out of everyone. If JFK and LBJ could combine on their ticket, anything's possible.

I watched Hillary Clinton on "Meet the Press" yesterday, and I was reminded of Dorothy Parker's putdown of Lillian Hellman's latest book.

Everything she writes is a lie, including "and" and "the"
