Major Applewhite going back to Texas? (1 Viewer)

After Mack screwed over Major and handed the starting qb job to Chris Simms I'm surprised Applewhite would want to come work for him. He would have to really hate working for Saban to bolt for Texas.

Which is entirely possible, of course.

Or he could simply love Texas.

He'd have to really hate Saban also because he grew up a Bama fan. He was actually named after a Bama player.

I know. But many of us grow up as fans of one team, and then for whatever reason alumni loyalties pull us elsewhere.

Count me among the crowd who doesn't really think MA is going anywhere regardless of his feelings about Texas...but I've been wrong many times before.

Some factors point to Applewhite possibly leaving Alabama:

1. Saban is very difficult to work for as an asst coach. I dont know how he is at Alabama, but at LSU he wouldnt even let his coaches talk to the press. He has lost a few of assts over the yrs to lateral type moves.

2. Applewhite played at Texas and was immensely popular there. He might well have "Austin" in his blood. Austin is a neat place to live and culturally miles ahead of Tuscaloosa. I have many friends who live in Austin and travel there a lot. Applewhite may secretly see Texas as his dream job and be willing to pay his dues as an asst coach there.

3. The mere fact Applewhite would interview with Texas in the waning days of the big recruiting battles is not a good sign for Alabama. Even if he stays at Alabama his willingness to consider a lateral move(or possibly downward move from OC to running backs coach) to Texas looks bad for Alabama. I cant see Applewhite interviewing, assuming thats true, unless he is very serious.

All that being said, I hope Applewhite goes to Texas. I think he is a rising star in the coaching business and I would be very happy to have him out of the sec.

Why? It's not like he accomplished anything this past year at Alabama.

If you think possibly losing your OC this close to signing day has no effect on anything. Well then I simply don't know what to tell you.

I actually kind of doubt any kid currently committed to Alabama leaves them because of Applewhite going. Maybe a kid or two leaves, i dont know. It might impact the few kids they are still recruiting, but their class is pretty full and there isnt much room anyway. I dont think the big prize, Julio Jones, is going there anyway.

Long term I think this is a bad thing for Bama if Saban cant get a high profile coach to replace Applewhite. I sure would not judge Applewhite as a coordinator based on one season. I would love to have him at LSU as a qb coach.

Applewhite leaving bama will not look good and Saban's honeymoon with the Bama fans is ending. Anyway Saban or bama spins it, Applewhite leaving after one year to take a lesser job looks really bad for their program.

Losing Middleton (their recruiting coordinator) hurt Bama's recruiting far more then losing Applewhite. Not all coaches recruit equally.

You just put LC into cardiac arrest somewhere.
:D

Of course, by lesser I mean he will be moving from a coordinator at bama to a running backs coach at texas. Coaches(and fans) rarely complain when one of their assts makes an upward move to another school. Its understandable. Applewhite taking a lesser position at texas, if he does, however, will really upset a lot of bama fans.
