In defense of Winston ( gulp ) (1 Viewer)

When are people on here going to realize Winston is fools gold. He hasnt changed at all from his Tampa days. He will give you a great game where he looks like a guy that can take this team to the playoffs and then has 2-3 horrible games, only to suck you back in with a good game. Stop kidding yourselves. He is a serviceable QB but that is about it at this point.

One play yesterday tells you a lot about Winston's instincts.

I don't remember when, but he was under pressure and just before being crushed (again) he launches a deep ball to TQS, who was double teamed and no where close to open. Luckily the ball was over thrown and incomplete.
This the story of Winston's career, when pressured throw it up and hope. It's why he lost his last job. A lot of people try to blame Arians for his 30 ints and there may be some truth to this but it's pretty obvious now that Winston just can't help himself. At least Payton knew how handle him. Pete and Dennis don't. Who's our QB coach?

Is it just me, or does the playcalling and even play design just look...I dunno, weird? It seems incredibly vanilla till we get in a hole and then suddenly the offense imposes their will. There's no reason it should be like that.

I think that could be his natural look, people always say l look P'Oed off, even when l am happy
Who are the "NFL people" who are upset at people saying Winston should be benched? Why? I am mad they are not discussing him getting benched. He is awful.

The playcalling is not doing him any favors. 4th quarter against the Falcons, he gets put in the shotgun and suddenly he's surgical with both fastballs and touch passes. Nah, we better keep him in five and seven step drops with turnstiles on the O-line. Like I said, something seems off, and it's not just Winston. I think Winston should be benched for his own sake if nothing else. He's pressing and he wasn't last season with worse skill position groups. That injury is really affecting his decision-making.

From 2015 till 2019 when Jameis, was with Tampa Bay, was anyone ever worried he was going to beat the Saints?? I don't think other teams we face now with him as our QB are worried either.

This is all I thought about when we signed him. Literally never scared me and was pretty sure he'd cough it up at least once every time.

I hoped SP would coach him up but here we are. He is what he is.

injury doesnt affect you calling out protection changes pre snap when you see the LB's flinching before the snap
I wouldn’t underestimate the effect of injuries and pain have on your mental reasoning. If they have him shot up with pain meds, there is no way that doesn’t create some mental fog. On the other hand, if he is trying to grit it out, your mind is going to be distracted by the pain. Regardless, I think he needs to sit until he’s fully healed.

Yardage means nothing . . . Or so I’ve been told on here.

There is a lot to say about yards (how you get them, how many, when, for-against, etc.) but in the end, the scoreboard doesn't keep track of yards.

The first game of last season, Winston only threw 14/20 for 148 yards, but that yielded 5 TDs. No one mentioned the 148 yards, just the 5 TDs.

In the same vein, what do we care if a QB throws for 350 yds, but they don't score enough to win the game?

Good teams find ways to win also. There is something wrong with the Saints offense at the moment. Most teams progress as the season goes on. This is not happening. Yesterday was a regression.

Yesterday we lost our 2 best receivers, our starting guard and were without our swiss army knife. The QB has broken vertebrae and our AP RB is banged up. To top it off, we fumbled away a score and replaced it with a TD going the opposite direction. We missed 2 kicks and our OL refused to block.

Regressing requires the same people to get worse. That's not really what happened.

Jameis Winston is the only active starting QB with more INTs than Games Started (min 16gs).

Winston has 5 INTs through 3 games in 2022. He is on pace for 28.3 INTs. I would bet he finishes this season with at least 1.2 INT/GS.

He has the lowest Passer Rating of his career this year and clearly not healthy. He isn’t the only problem but his INTs lost the TB game. His slow starts didn’t help in Atl or Car. A poor performance against Minny should see him benched.

The key to stopping the Saints offense is to allow the Saints to miss blocks, commit stupid penalties, fumble while in scoring position, miss field goals and leave their QB to be killed.
Indeed, the Saints offense is struggling for multiple reasons, but some of those mistakes have always been present. The offensive line used to mess up under Brees as well, but he would get rid of the ball so quickly, that it would hide their mistakes. All offensive lines make mistakes, but a QB that doesn't get rid of the ball exposes their mistakes.

I understand the point, however, folks did bring up his 148 yards.

Disclaimer upfront: his injuries are affecting his play enough to warrant a switch to Dalton, IMO.

If I tried to pinpoint the biggest two negative aspects the injuries are having on his game is:
1) It is causing him to be an "arm thrower." Not getting his body into the throws like he's used to. He has a strong arm and can somewhat get away with it, but it is also holding him/the Saints back.
2) Last season, when he was healthy, he scrambled for quite a few first downs and kept drives alive. He's not doing that or feels he can't do this year and it is killing some drives.

Non-injury related, his mental aspects of the game have regressed. Holding onto the ball and not processing plays shouldn't be happening. He's an intelligent man and has a lot of experience. That is the most alarming part to me because that shouldn't be happening. Loomis gave him a smart contract that won't kill us if he doesn't pan out.

And looking around the league, the other recycled QBs aren't faring any better. As much as I want to be winning and playing better, I'm glad we didn't break the bank for Watson, Wilson or gone after guys like Trubiski, Ryan, Mayfield or Garoppolo, etc.

Finally, Winston is a part of the problem, but so many other areas are very disappointing. The capabilities of Dennis Allen and Carmichael are in question. Where's the pass rush? Injuries! Special teams (even Gilliken looks mortal, now).

All of our games are very close and are winnable and one or two breakdowns, bad calls or stupid penalties are the difference between a W or an L.

NFL Research: The Saints have been shut out in the first half four times in their first 20 games following Drew Brees' retirement. They were shut out in the first half four times in 228 games with Brees as their starter (2006-2020).
