When Winston finishes with a decent, up & down statistical year and gets the team to or near playoff contention, does the FO hold off on drafting a 1st round QB until ‘24/‘26 and continue to invest in building the near future around Winston for another year through the draft by using some of the early picks (counting compensatory & Payton trade’s picks) on G, TE, & RB?

Or do we restart young at QB and invest in one of the top 6 franchise QB draft prospects with the potential Payton trade’s 1st rounder even after Winston progresses and potentially leads the team to a playoff seed this season? Assuming Payton coaches somewhere next year based on his interviews.

Young or Stroud are day 1 ready to step in under center and be missing the piece to a contending team that’s already elite at every other skill position like we have. But it probably takes the ‘23-‘26 1sts (counting the Payton trade’s ‘23 1st) and multiple 2nds & 3rds to get a top 2-3 pick. Basically all early draft capital for the next 3-4 years. Anthony Richardson and KJ Jefferson could go in the 15-25 pick range but may need some-all of ‘23 before they’re ready to start while they have a lot of upside as passers and playmaking QBs.

We're in trouble. We should hope Winston can stabilize us for a couple of years because getting in the top 5 to gamble on the next Zach Wilson or Trey Lance is going to get people fired, and I don't see Allen lasting more than a couple years on our current trajectory.

^^^^All of this, someone in SF is going to get fired over the Lance screwup....AND.....I'm not sure the GMs in Denver and Cleveland survive their splurges for "Franchise QB"

I voted play through '24 and get QB then....but I also can see us with a Justin Fields or Jordan Love type restoration if we're unable to get a guy in the draft.

Is somebody high on Jefferson? I'm shocked
Hendon Hooker out of Tennesee is better, IMO.

I get the feeling passing on Peterson is going to come back and haunt us.

Trey Lance over Ja'Marr Chase is the kind of thing you'd only see from the arm chair GMs... the fact it actually happened still makes me laugh.

Should of been addressed for the past 5 years. What franchises don't prepare for this, knowing their long time quarterback is leaving or retiring? Keep trading up for picks after picks that has been solid but not game changing. Boy if Pickett turn out great for Pittsburg, I would not know what to say.

I figured Hooker would be the 4th QB taken after Levis outside of where the Cowboys or Chargers pick may end up when they make the playoffs. I don’t think Hooker will last late enough the more Tennessee Vols keep winning while they’re ranked top 10. He’s the perfect pick for the Titans. Anthony Richardson and Jefferson seems like they’ll be there in the 20s.

We have a very expensive/talented team built to win now.

I see us trying to get a veteran QB better than what we have now.
Drafting a stud QB could happen as well for the future, but you can expect a rook to take this team to the SB.

I think its more complicated than that based on Brees' evolving retirement date and Sean's preferences. One, I do think Teddy was the initial plan but Drew kinda extended his desire to play a couple more years. Two, once you take a QB high you're basically forcing the vet out and I don't think they wanted to approach the situation like that. Finally, I think Sean did not want to deal with rook growing pains.

We had this discussion in the off season but who is available that doesn't wreck our cap and whatever draft capital we have left?

I don't know the future.
Let's wait and see who's available.

Lamar Jackson. That man will follow the money. Unfortunately, we will have to back up the Brinks/Loomis/Garda truck. I only say that if Jameis isn’t here and we have little to no draft capital to select a QB early. This could all change when we get picks for SP though. I’d love to get Stroud out of OSU though.
