I was wondering if anyone here knows about the policy of getting insurance for someone who has just started driving, because my dad thinks that I have to be under his plan, but I don't think that's true. I ask because if I have to be under his plan then that would raise his insurance sky high, and would mean I can't drive until I am 18. Does anyone know if there's a way a new driver (Under 18) could get insurance for themselves and not have to pay for insurance on all the cars in the household? If there are any certain companies that allow these things or some that don't please mention that, too. And if anyone has any idea how much it would cost for a new driver to get insurance on one car, that'd be great.

Anything you know about this will be greatly appreciated, and I want to use this as a base of looking into it a little harder in the coming days to make sure it's all true.

you would have to check with state law where you at but most place will not allow a juvenile to enter into a cotract. what i saying is this unless your an adult you can not get insurence unless its under a parents plan.. here in ga you have to be 17...
now in ga you cant get your license till your 17 unless you have drivers ed. but you cant get drivers ed till your 17 due to the back log.

When my son and daughter started driving...I actually received a discount for family [multi-drivers] on my plan...of course the rates will go up...that's a given...but most insurance companies have a discounted plan to work with....it may just all boil down to whether your father can afford the rate increase...especially for [young males under 18]...that's the kicker...

And no....you cannot get your own policy under the age of 18...forget that...your a high liability as it is being a male driver under the age of 18....you have to be under your guardians plan until such time....

So do I have to be insured on ALL of my parents cars?

In Texas, I don't have to insure all 3 of my teenagers as drivers of all of our vehicles. They each drive certain automobiles and are excluded from driving others. I had to sign a form for my insurance carrier.

no, you dont. they make you sign a paper saying that they wont provide coverage if you are driving one of the other cars. Its called an exclusion like someone said before.

Does anyone with Allstate know if this applies with them as well?
