"When Grand Theft Auto IV was pushed back late last year, several people naturally assumed it would be ultimately pushed back yet again to sell during the holiday season. But Rockstar had promised only a slight delay, and apparently they meant it.

A press release sent out today confirms that the highly anticipated title will be hitting for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on April 29, 2008."

I've never been a big fan of this series, but maybe it's time to give it shot?

Yeah, I didn't think I'd like it either, but I played Vice City once with a bunch of friends and bought a PS2 a week later.

This will probably be the game that makes me go next gen (finally)

The GTA series is propably one of the best series in video game history. Many Many Many knockoff's have tried to emulate the style of play but few have even come close.

Could very well be. But IMO, Zelda and Mario can never be touched. I haven't played either since the 64 days (IIRC), but both Zelda and Mario on the 64 were probably my favorite games ever, besides Madden. I have the newest Zelda on Wii, but I've never got around to play it.

yeah.....if you were going to pick two influental game franchises......and you aren't a sports game only fan....those two are it. It's not even close.

not even close???? come on brah....the GTA series changed games forever with it's open ended game play.....to think that GTA was not influential to gaming is silly....sure mario was important 20 years ago, but come on

And of course the Castle Wolfenstein -> Doom -> Quake progression, which was pretty much the beginning of the FPS genre.

Pop and Buzd....you both are talking in terms of genres......Mario and Zelda quite simply began the ascension of video games as a culture. I am talking on a whole different level. Before Mario and Zelda, video games were still seen as something you did in an arcade.....now before you start throwing out Atari and Colecovision and all that stuff.....just don't. There is no comparison.

:plus-un2: Exactly. The GTA series is like life where you can do what you want, when you want and it's not restricted in any kind of way like in other games, which is the reason why it's so popular.

well i can't argue with that....mario was huge for video games.....but GTA was definately groundbreaking in other ways.....think of all the games that have adopted the "sand box" format......also, what game has recieved more attention for it's content by non-gamers???

when it comes down to it, GTA has a huge place in gaming history.....maybe not mario huge, but it's an important piece of the past
