-- NFL Owners Set to Opt Out of Bargaining Deal --
Fri Jan 25, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com

The Philadelphia Daily News reports the NFL averted a labor war two years ago when outgoing commissioner Paul Tagliabue strong-armed the owners into agreeing to a collective-bargaining- agreement extension that gave the players 60 percent of the league's pot of gold. The owners can opt out of the deal in November, which seems almost a certainty right now. If that happens, 2009 would be the last capped year of the current agreement. There would be no salary cap in 2010, but the service requirement for free agency would jump from 4 to 6 years. "I think it's really common knowledge our last labor agreement is not our smartest move," Broncos owner Pat Bowlen told Jeff Legwold, of the Rocky Mountain News. "And I'm not talking about [just] the Denver Broncos. I'm talking about the [whole] league. We can't live with this deal."

-- Cardinals Set to Franchise Dansby --
Fri Jan 25, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com

The Arizona Republic reports from Feb. 7 to Feb. 21, teams can use their franchise and transition tags on players. The Cardinals are expected to franchise LB Karlos Dansby after failing to sign him to a new long-term deal.

Working out a new CBA could get really ugly. The NFL could strike after next season. Sucks about Dansby, but I didn't expect us to have a real shot at him anyway.

I dont see a work stoppage. Both sides have too much to lose to let something like that happen. It'll get done.

The NFL will not strike. They are in the height of popularity. However, its gonna be really hard to go away from what you have now. Players are getting record breaking deals and more players of high caliber will want the same. You can't just take it away after you've given them a taste.

I'm thinking that most of the big name defensive players that are scheduled to become UFA's will get tagged next month.

Limit and slot rookie contracts, please.

Definetly, its not fair they come in making 10mill a year and havent taken an NFL snap, they should be like the NBA or MLB with moderate 3-4yr deals to start off with...and there is no reason a player should be a 100 million dollar contract (which we are leaning to) its making the game less about football and more about who gets paid most, you cant keep players and if you sign one of these players you cant build your team cause thats were your dough went, and no player ever really earns that money, cause as soon as it starts to affect the cap, there gone, SF spent 80mill on a DB and won 4 games or so, not saying he wasnt worth it, but that dont add up...we spent 60+ mill on a DE and got 2.5 sacks and 7 wins....it dont always add up, the contracts are getting out of hand, even though the cap is going up.

Unfortunately, I think you're giving both sides in this discussion too much credit, intellect-wise. I believe an extended strike is already a certainty.

You are almost punished by having a top 10 pick because although the talent is nice, it probably doesn't justify the cap hit you will take on a player that will typically take 2 or 3 years to develop.

The 1 great equalizer: Upshaw will bend over, and take one for the team.<!-- / message -->

The history of the league and the players is to have a ridiculous strike despite the game's popularity and affluence. Like in the two strikes back in the 1980s (1982 and 1987). The saving grace since then has been the players getting the free agency they didn't have, and the NFL owners getting a cap on overall player compensation as a percentage of revenue. If that deal breaks down, I could see this turning ugly just like the haircuts on A Flock of Seagulls.

not suprising! Expect Trufant and the Corner for the Raiders to be franchised as well or get a new deal.

On the surface I agree. I think the NBA does one thing right, and thats it.

But you have to look at it this way. Its not always about on the field performance. Football teams are a business. Players are payed crazy salaries because they bring in crazy profits for the team. What the players make is just a fraction of what a team brings in. So is it really fair to limit NFL salaries for the people who are actually bringing in the money, while some owner gets rich off his *** at their expense?

I do like the idea of Rookie salaries being capped, but more in the terms of how you structure it. Having the cap hit for cutting them be light if they don't work out in the first 2 years or something of that nature. Maybe less guranteed money with more being guranteed if they are still on the team in 2 years.

Weren't they saying the same thing back in the mid-80's? Sorry, but it could happen. I sincerely hope not, but the players have gained too much to allow the league to take it back now. I'm not saying something won't get done, but the popularity of the sport will not enter into the question.

that and require more performance based pay to the salaries (of course playing time and injury time must be accounted for in those typoes of incentives).

No way the players would ever agree to incorporate more performance based pay, absolutely never will happen and I don't blame them. I really could care less about a player's salary. If there is a team willing to pay a player what he wants, great for him.
