Is There A Win Total That Saves DA’s Job? (1 Viewer)

Bc with a new hire, there would most likely be a more extensive HC search. You would afford a fresh new hire more time. Awhile back, I posted a “timeline” of events that went down, which caused us to make a more quick decision (DA) based on the bad timing of SP’s decision. Loomis only had a little over two months to find someone and many of the highly sought after candidates were already taken. Some have referred to the DA hiring as “lazy” and that is valid, but I just view it as a “comfort” hire. Given the lack of time and options available, it was a streamline hire and he hasn’t produced, which looks really bad imho

Possibly but that sounds more like an explanation meant to support a particular hope.

It's possible that Loomis was blind-sided by Payton's decision but as close as those two are reported to be, I think Loomis had some advanced knowledge to at least get the process laid out to hit the ground running.

Payton resigned January 25th (?) and Pederson (interviewed with the Saints), O'Connell, and McMichael were all February hires. Dabol was announced January 29th, so that process might have been too far advanced for the Saints to jump in.

I haven't seen much interest expressed in Hackett and Eberflus here but agree the timing is an issue in their respective cases. Bowles, like Allen, was an internal hire. Lovie Smith was highly sought after? Josh McDaniels?

I don't think Loomis and Benson view Allen as a placeholder that they will have a quick hook with, though it won't disappoint me if that turns out to be the case.

There isn’t a number. I just don’t think for the good and future of this franchise that Allen continues as coach. It’s time to completely cut the ties of the Payton era and start fresh

Lack of picks, no public outcry from GM (Loomis being quiet says a lot), and continued Salary cap issues for at least another year pretty much cement DA's around for at least a Year 2.

It's more likely that minor changes happen with personnel and coaches in year 2. Departures, additions, etc.

I think the only way he gets retained is IF the Saints make the playoffs.

Yep. Someone needs to take the Ls while we fix cap and find a QB. Might as well be DA. I think he sticks to 2023 barring a player revolt. Having the 8th most salary cap on IR buys excuses. Losing so much D talent in the offseason doesn’t help.

In 2024, I think we have a new coach. We either draft a 1st round QB in ‘24 or take a 2nd round QB in ‘23.

There’s a good chance of a 7-10 finish. Most 1st yr coaches won’t lose a job after that.

I'd almost wait until 24 to do so and see if DA Falls off a cliff during that time. At least you'd be drafting a rookie QB that would be coming into a new system Year 1, vs drafting one in 23 and putting him in jeopardy of having a to learn a new system in Year 2 because you likely wipe the slate clean.

With the win yesterday, DA actually set a personal best record for most wins in a season by a head coach. His previous best was 3 wins in both full seasons with the Raiders. Maybe now that he got throw that ceiling with a 4th win, he might be better. I could barely keep a straight face typing this haha

For example, if the Saints can somehow get to 7 wins, does DA return next year?
To me the number is wins don't matter. We beat the Rams yesterday. Team looked prepared and ready to play. No turnovers and 2 penalties. Now what's going to happen next week against the 49ers? If the team is prepared and ready to play and we lose I'm ok with that, but if we look like we did against the Ravens and Steelers that's a problem. We know about all the injuries but as the coach you still need to get the team ready to play and put the players you have in the best situation to be successful, and do that consistently. He is not doing that consistently that's why he should be one and done, but if we get to 6 wins, they will bring him back and use all the injuries as an excuse.

I'm not defending him but I don't think Allen's job is in as much jeopardy as others do. I think he's more likely to be back next season than not. He's well known to Loomis and Benson, I believe the relationship is probably a friendly one, and they will give him more than a season at the job. I think the only thing that would change that is if there were internal cultural problems that they held him responsible for.

While I’m in the group that wants him gone now (and I’m far from the Steinbrenner type attitude) the Saints historically under Benson have been very slow/reluctant to get rid of coaches….Mora basically had to quit, they kept Haslett around for at least 2 more years than he deserved and most certainly made the same mistake with Ditka…historically….I hope Ms Benson is just a bit more demanding of her HC….we will see….but i think you may be correct….unfortunately

4. That is the win total that saves his job.

Because as much as any of us think he should be gone... he's not going to be fired this year.

I think the ceiling has been reached because I really felt like there wasn’t any way Loomis would dump Allen after one season unless we went 3-14.

We could still conceivably go 4-13, but I think on talent alone they’ll likely win 1-2 more games. I think Allen stays if that’s they case.

Just a gut feeling.

I'd say if he can eck out 11 wins this year, he's got nothing to worry about. Anything less, and he's at risk...

I disagree completely. I think it's asinine to expect anyone to succeed at anything in short order given impossible odds. The Saints and society would be better off learning patience and lessening the microwave society.

CSP was lucky in 06. All the stars aligned. That's not how it goes when you have 9 out of 22 starters on the sideline next to your retired former QB.
