World Cup 2022 - Qatar (with SR Pick'Em league) (4 Viewers)

Just curious, why?

If seeking a somewhat family atmosphere for a sporting event, I'd imagine the Qatar WC would fit.

This certainly isnt an endorsement of the Qatari royal family's politics, btw.
Triumph, the Qatari royal family's political views towards LGBT community non-withstanding, the simple, inescapable reality behind Qatari hosting of the WC in the years leading up to the event has been sheetty, atrocious, and unmistakably cruel and inhumane. Especislly considering how they treated tens of thousands of migrant workers with food, medical care, lack of adequate living conditions, using a form of quasi-modern slavery to lure migrant workers from South Asian, Southeast Asian and sub-Saharan African nations to leave their homes in the hopes of making big money, confiscating their passports once they arrive, paying them maybe 1/3th,1/4th of what many were originally promised. Overwork, malnutrition, extreme heat exhaustion, scant, ineffective or little to any medical care for serious injuries suffered on the jpb.

And I have to imagine Wales is going to be super-fired up for England. I think the US just screwed themselves out of advancing. Big bummer.
I don't think it's all doom and gloom England should turn Wales over, and England will likely want to win the group to avoid some of the bigger sides in the round of 16 but getting a result against England is obviously the ideal scenario now. If we play for a draw against England though I think we'll get turned over ourselves.

I'm aware of all that and don't endorse their methods.

I guess I'm nitpicking over the "wouldnt take a kid" and am requesting further explanation. I'd imagine the gameday experience would be fairly "wholesome".

Unless people take their kids to sporting events and use that as a teaching moment for politics.

Was there anything controversial about England’s winning goal vs. Argentina in the final match of the 1966 World Cup?

England scoring a winning goal against Argentina in England's 1966 WC final match against West Germany? Now, that's controversial!!

Little bits of historical trivia for you, Geldo since the World Cup brings out a sufficient amount of nationalism and its not too messy and violent, except a short-lived Soccer War IIRC in the early 1970’s:

What famous English royal house was originally from Wales that ruled England, Wales, and parts of Scotland for over a hundred years in the early modern period?

Does the famous dragon logo in the Welsh national flag have any association with the mythical King Arthur and was the part-mythical Arthur Welsh himself?

Did the Romans ever conquer Wales after their initial invasion in 43 C..E. near modern-day Dover and did Wales actually exist as a geopolitical or national entity during the Roman occupation phase of the British Isles history?

Does the word “Wales” mean stranger in old Germanic Saxon language?

Coal from Welsh mines was used by the ship makers and luxury lining company in Belfast that was used on the Titanic’s first(and Ill-fated) maiden voyage.

Was there anything controversial about England’s winning goal vs. Argentina in the final match of the 1966 World Cup?

BTW, good luck on your upcoming match vs. England in the WC and I hope any Welsh win sort of offsets any doubts or misgivings about Qatar being a good host country because IMHO, they’ve been an abysmal one and not just for their laws criminalizing homosexuality or foreigners living in the country but how they’ve treated, paid or lack thereof hundreds of thousands of migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, sub-Saharan African countries and even a few Latin American nations, a few thousand of which died over the past decade due to overwork, heat exhaustion, malnutrition, sheetty medical care, atrocious living conditions for migrant workers.

It’s worse then criminal and if you’ve seen some of the same photos, documentaries, and tragic stories of young, middle-aged men who died over there building these same stadiums, it seriously breaks your heart.
Food for thought as ever...I'm sad enough to know most of the answers. :)
As for your third question that's fascinating because the Ordovicii were the last unconquered tribe south of Hadrian's Wall and Caractacus made his last stand against the Romans in the borderlands at either Malvern, Brampton Brian or Church Stretton. Was actually up at the old stone circle at Mitchell's fold last weekend wondering what life must have been like in those times. It was freezing - on a mild MId-November day!
And you're right the world cup allows us to partake in some fun and friendly nationalism that isn't toxic!
It's ironic that the Welsh house of Tudor which ruled England actually banned the use of the Welsh language - a ban which continued in some forms until 1942!

And yes it's horrifying that Qatar is using sportwashing to promote it's regime and human rights abuses, but I always find it insanely hypocritical that big business does a huge amount of trade with Qatar and no one cares. And in the same way Saudi Arabia is exporting terrorism, has a worst humans rights record than Qatar by miles, and is conducting a brutal war against rebels in the Yemen - largely without condemnation.
The world is a sick place mate :(

I can’t believe I wikis up to KSA over Argentina. Sure, Argentina has always had a history of crapping the bed, but man…not like this.
I had it on while I was working this morning. Argentina were dominating the possession and chances, but Saudi Arabia were pretty solid defensively and did a great job keeping a high line and playing Argentina offside (although as usual you can argue about just how offside they were). I think Argentina had three goals ruled out through that alone.

So my impression - although granted I wasn't giving it my full attention - was that I didn't think Argentina were particularly poor so much as Saudi Arabia were well-prepared and did what they needed to do.

It makes that group intriguing. I think Argentina still have a good shot at qualifying, but I'll be interested to see how Saudi Arabia do against Mexico and Poland.

arg vs Saudi could have been 4-2 if not for offsides, that cleary deflated them and they came out flat for the second half.

the second Saudi gaol was the goal of the tournament so far

I'm not sure a draw against England is all that bad. If we draw against England and beat Iran, we end up with 5 points. That leaves two scenarios (depending on the result of Wales/Iran) going into the Wales/England game.

Wales beat Iran
USA 5 points
England 4 points
Wales 4 points
Iran 0 points.

A result in the England/Wales game gives the winner 7 points, and they and the USA advance. A draw leads to a 3 way tie bewteen the US, England, and Wales. Tiebreakers are, in order: goal differential and then number of goals scored.

Iran beats Wales
USA 5 points
England 4 points
Iran 3 points
Wales 1 point

England beats Wales and England wins the group with 7 points, the US advances with 5. Wales beats England, the US is tied for the group lead and England and the US advance. Obviously, this is the best scenario for US, if we draw against England.

Of course, a win against England is the best outcome for us, as it almost guarantees us a spot in the knockout round.
