I wonder if this is going to impact Obama?

Rezko had long been a fundraiser for Obama. The Democratic presidential candidate and senator from Illinois has said he had no indication of problems with Rezko when he accepted thousands of dollars in campaign contributions.

Obama has since sought to distance himself from Rezko, even as Clinton invoked Rezko's name and his "slum lord business" during a recent debate.

Depending on who gets to the general election maybe. However, if the Clinton's want to make an issue out of the shady actions of contributers and supporters after all the attacks they have endured for the last 17 years in that regard I will have to LMAO.

I tend to agree with SBTB....it's probably more meaningful in the General Election because Hillary and Bill live in a glass house on this issue. However, I have to wonder if younger voters will become disenchanted if they learn Obama is simply a younger version of Bill.

I am a bit curious to know how anyone could buy a home $300,000 below the asking price during the height of the RE boom?

"I did make a mistake by purchasing a small strip of property from him, at a time where, at that point, he was under the cloud of a potential investigation," Obama told ABC Sunday.

Shortly after his election to the U.S. Senate, Obama bought a house for $300,000 below the asking price. The same day, Rezko's wife bought the lot next door for full price. Months later, Obama bought a sliver of the Rezko land to expand his yard."

Obama buys Rezko land
Over the years, Rezko, Mahru, their wives and businesses have given more than $50,000 to Obama's campaign funds, records show. And Rezko has helped raise millions more.

Rezko was among the people Obama appointed to serve on his U.S. Senate campaign finance committee, the Sun-Times reported in 2003. The committee raised more than $14 million, according to Federal Election Commission records, helping send Obama to Washington in 2004.

As a U.S. senator, Obama grew closer to Rezko.

Two years ago, Obama bought a mansion on the South Side, in the Kenwood neighborhood, from a doctor. On the same day, Rezko's wife, Rita Rezko, bought the vacant lot next door from the same seller. The doctor had listed the properties for sale together. He sold the house to Obama for $300,000 below the asking price. The doctor got his asking price on the lot from Rezko's wife.
Last year, Rita Rezko sold a strip of that vacant lot to Obama for $104,500 -- a deal Obama later apologized for, acknowledging that people might think he got a favor from Rezko. Obama called the episode "boneheaded'' and a "mistake.''

I have a buddy in Illinois who is in the corporate RE Business and he believes there's more going to come out on this. He emailed me the attached newscast. As indicated in the video, this may be a Regional issue because I haven't seen anything on any of the national media outlets about the recent events involving Rezko.

What did Obama do that was wrong? He should have cut his ties to Rezko as soon as there were implications that he was unsavory, but Obama has yet to be accused of doing anything illegal or wrong.

I heard about this, and it sounds like something that carries the most weight with folks who would never have voted for Obama in the first place.

I saw a reporter from the Sun Times comment on this a few days ago. He said that the papers and reporters up there had investigated Obama's ties to this stuff backwards and forwards and there really wasn't anything there. It was in the context of whether Clinton's criticism in the debate had any merit.
Of course I don;t think Whitewater had any merit and look how that investigation turned out.

I think the main point is most voters believe the Clintons are dirty and even though their activities are of questionable ethics, apparently they aren't illegal. With this transaction, it appears Obama is cut from the same cloth.

Update: Yesterday Rezko was convicted. GOP in full attack mode.

Within hours of Tony Rezko's conviction Wednesday, Republican Party leaders launched a blistering attack against Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, whose political career began with Rezko's financial support.
"On the day Barack Obama hoped to unite his party after wheezing over the finish line and claiming the Democrat nomination, a jury in his hometown of Chicago convicted his longtime friend and fund-raiser Tony Rezko of multiple felonies," Republican National Committee chairman Robert "Mike" Duncan said. "Today's verdict and Obama's friendship with Rezko raise serious questions about whether he has the judgment to serve as president.''

Obama's campaign staff put out a statement quoting him as saying, in part, "This isn't the Tony Rezko I knew." But an aide declined to respond to the GOP attack, which included a new Web site, www.RezkoJudgment.com, and a YouTube video dubbed "Obama's Money Man."

Mods: Can you please update the title to .....and Convicted?

I would tend to agree with this. Maybe not the exact cloth but not virgin linen either. They are all politicians who get favors, expect favors and generally think highly of themselves.

There may be nothing to this story; however, here are some of my crazy thoughts on the Rezko saga:
  • Is it possible Hillary is dragging her feet on suspending her campaign because she was counting on the conviction of Rezko coming down this week? Could she still be clinging to hope of hopes that this or something like this would be her ticket to the nomination?
  • Was this story or something along these lines a metaphor triggering Hillary's Bobby Kennedy gaffe?
  • Is there something more in Obama's "appearance of impropriety" pipeline?
As mentioned above; Hillary can't throw too many stones at Obama because the Clintons don't have clean hands. However, the Feds certainly can pursue this. Maybe she was hoping that the Rezko net would entangle Obama.

Again, there may be nothing to this story; but it's interesting the GOP has gone on full attack mode on this issue.

I can't predict what the Hillary camp's thought processes are but if they were hinging their hopes on Obama being indicted or something, then they weren't really in touch with reality. That never seemed to be even remotely on the Feds' radar.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. In other words, Hillary's delay is simply that she didn't want to let go.

No. Obama didn't even get a dip from him being arrested. The conviction was expected and in no way would have been sufficient. Hillary staying was without doubt completely divorced from this.

How aggressive should the GOP be on a corruption angle *cough* "Keating Five" *cough*? Better route, IMO, is for the GOP to not push hard with the Rezko issue.
