Ask Mike – January 31, 2008 (1 Viewer)

Great questions & answers by Mike. I would love to see Ellis as the Saints 1st rounder, even if they have to give up something to move up(I think he is that good).
The MM outlook really would help the team, if he could in fact come back that soon.

I love Deuce... He's my favorite Saints player of ALL-TIME, but here's what scares the most with his situation.

Let's say he does get released... Where do you think he'll land? The FREAKIN FALCONS! They need a power type change-of-pace RB to go along with Norwood, and we all know how they LOVE former Saints. Seeing Deuce in a Falcons uni would KILL me! I could never hate Deuce, but seeing that would just make me sick.

Steelers might have an interest. Najeh Davenport is OK, but since Bettis' retirement they have been in search of a top-tier power runner to complement Willie Parker.

Darn, it looks like we probably wont take Kenny Phillips, unless puts up crazy numbers in the combine. I still believe that Kenny will become one of the elite safties in the NFL (Ed Reed, Darren Sharper, Brian Dawkins, Adrian Wilson, etc.), and having an elite safety on your defense makes a tremendous impact. I dont see Josh Bullocks ever becoming a high caliber safety. And I dont see how Kenny Phillips will not go in the top 15; Denver or Carolina would take him in a heartbeat.
It's fine for you to have your own opinion on Phillips, but it might be time to recognize that Phillips probably isn't as highly rated as many think on this board. Comparing at this point to Ed Reed is a comparison not based in reality. Of course what Mike Detillier says isn't the gospel, but when you have a few prominent draft analysts say that Phillips probably isn't even the top Safety in the draft, then you might want to lower your expectations. Safeties don't normally go real high in the draft unless they are rated exceptionally well. Detillier having him going at #27 to the Chargers should bring some of you guys back to reality.

I'd like to see MM come back at FS. I really think he could excel at that spot for us... and it would be a good move for him at this stage of his career, and coming back from the knee injury.

Man, I dont get the Kenny Phillips crush on this board, ok I get it, yall dont like Bullocks, but to take Phillips with the 10th choice in the draft (overall) with needs a linebacker (for years) and dt (since Glover got played) is rediculous, you can find a solid safety in rounds 4-7 (thats were they are usually picked up) and I personally dont think Bullocks is that bad, and we do have KK to insert for that veteran presense everybody seems to want instead of young players because they lack experience (load of crap).

It shouldn't be as big a deal as it would be for a cornerback as it would be for a runningback.Even though Mike is older than most I could see him making a full recover.Deuce on the other hand I don't see be very productive any longer ala Eddie george.

I don't get the Deuce comment. If he restructures, great. If he refuses, and we cut him, that will wreak havoc on our salary cap. I think we have to keep him at least another year, as it will likely not be much difference from his salary to the cap hit we take if we cut him.

?? What cap hit? The organization will save money by cutting Deuce.

Over 9.8 million in pro-rated bonus money would come due in 2008 if we let Deuce go. That is hardly negated by dropping his 3.6 million dollar salary and not paying a 1 million roster bonus due on March 1. The cap hit would be over 4 mill.

You can designate him a post-July 1st cut before March 1st (you can designate 2), which let's you spread it out over 2 seasons (this year's pro-rated portion this year and the rest next). Not sure how the math works out there, but either way it is doable, and long-term saves cap-space. But no, cutting Deuce now isn't going to provide much immediate relief.

Deuce has one more year then he will be cut when we start to pay Smith, Evans and Colston.

They can designate it a post July 1 cut if they pay the March 1st one mill roster bonus. That counts against 2008 no matter what. The cap hit would be smaller for 2008, but there would definitely be a hit.

I didn't know that, thanks for clearing that up.

So do you guys think Duece might not be in the picture after all, regardless of the knee? You guys think the Saints front office has decided to push forward the inevitable?.....I think it may become pretty obvious if a back with size is drafted at some point in the draft, I mean wasn't that the purpose of the Pittman pick?

only thing that i'd like about deuce being a falcon, is i'd be able to see him by driving up the road a couple miles.
Other than that.. red and black is NOT his colors. please deuce, Stay black & gold .

Bump

Mike mentioned Ernest Willford as a possible option at WR. What do you guys think of him and do you think we will actually make a run at him?
