Derek Carr world tour thread (updated with combine visits) (1 Viewer)

Carr has some leverage in this with his no trade clause. He'll be able to pick his team and the Raiders will have to either accept the compensation offered or decide to keep him. If he decides on the Saints, they shouldn't offer more than a 5th or 6th rounder to the Raiders to take his contract off their hands.

I can't see the Raiders trading him for mid round picks regardless of his salary. QBs get paid and if the new team reworks his deal it likely won't be that bad.

I'm meh on Carr, but he is better than Dalton for sure and still has some gas left in the tank. Probably better than whatever rookie we could draft with the 29th pick this year or a 2nd rounder. I've heard some say the QBs next year will be better. If that's true, get Carr, a good backup this year, and draft a rookie with our 1st next year to sit and learn while Carr plays.

My biggest concern is that Carr is more like Winston than he is Brees. Is the coaching staff actually willing to change the offense to suit his strengths? They haven't shown that so far.

Top 10 is debatable. Guys I’d definitely put ahead of him:

Mahomes
Burrow
Hurts
Allen
Herbert
Jackson
Lawrence
Rodgers (if he plays)

Maybe:

Cousins
Tua (health)
Dak
Kyler (health)
Daniel Jones
Goff

That’s 8 definites and 6 maybes.

I’d probably say around 11-12. But a case could be made for anywhere between 9 and 15.
I think he's in the Dak/Kirk tier. Good enough to be a winning team but not enough to win a Super Bowl.

IDK but trading for Carr is risky. He had some serious weapons in NV, Adams and Waller. And was meah at best. We can offer him a very good second year WR and up and coming UDFA WR and after a 6-game suspension AK. OL is OK at best, no TE threat. IDK but we are miles away from contending for anything even in this division, which we couldn't grab last season when the division was a mess.
Trading draft capital for a 30 yr old middling QB is dumb IMO.

Looks like we have our QB. I’m happy with this, he’s a top 10-15 QB and is a massive upgrade on Dalton.

If you can go 7-10 with Andy Dalton, you can go at least 10-7 with Derek Carr.
A bit presumptuous. A visit doesn't mean he's signing. We aren't the only QB needy team out there.

This will Lowkey make the offseason a lil better as long as we don't do any thing crazy to get him

This. It will take a great defensive effort to win a superbowl with him. But we need to become relevant again and he can help us do that.

Top 10 in what?

So if one game sample size means nothing, why is Carr an upgrade when both Jameis and Dalton have a career QBR higher than him?

"A player who lost this job to Andy Dalton?" Come on man, both you know and I know that has more to do with DA than any skill or performance. And while we are on that.

Upgrade though?

I’d recommend going back and watching those games in context for both players for a few reasons.

Jameis took a ton of sacks he didn’t have to. Six in the Tampa game alone. It’s been stated that he failed to identify the hot routes quite a few times, and teams could just blitz at will. That’s not the type of thing that shows up in the numbers.

As for Carr, one of those two losses was the game they were beating the Rams 16-3 in the 4th quarter and took the air out of the ball. The other was a windy night in Pittsburgh. And the other was a win in which they put up 30 points, including Carr leading a game-tying TD drive with 32 seconds left.

I’m not saying Carr is a hall of famer. But making the case that he’s an upgrade over Dalton and 2022 Winston isn’t difficult.

Agreed. At the time, I think the general hope was that Brees would be what we're hoping Carr could be; a solid starter who can run the offense competently and raise the overall level of competitiveness of the team. Expectations were also tempered because Payton was unproven as a head coach.
No one saw Top-15 All-Time Great QB in San Diego Brees' future, but he was still only 27 years old, his career arc was on the upswing, and it was perfectly reasonable to believe that he hadn't yet hit his ceiling.

Carr will be 32 by Opening Day 2023, and it's most likely that the best we've seen of him is the best we're going to get. And whereas Payton was unproven as a head coach, one could say that Dennis Allen is very much proven 🥴. In other words, if there's any upside left to be squeezed out of Carr, Allen ain't the guy to do the squeezing...

This feels like the kind of move that will land us solidly in the Kirk Cousins Purgatory of 1 playoff win, maybe 2... tops. If either Carr or Allen possess the grit, moxie, and streak of brilliance required to manufacture a serious run, I will be pleasantly surprised. But at least the regular seasons will be meaningful again....

Yeah I think that’s fair, though I think you can still win a Super Bowl with that kind of player.

Foles won one. Jimmy G is below all those guys and was one pass away from winning one.

But yeah, at some point, a QB will have to make a play.

A 3 game sample? They both have 8 to 9 year careers to compare. I don't think Carr should be over the hill for a few more years.

I totally agree.
To me he’s not worth the contract, he will not get us a championship. Which should be the goal imo. I would not surrender a single pick for him, unless they’re eating almost all of his salary. Kicking this can makes sense when we are close, we are not close imo.

We need many draft picks, need those cheaper contracts. Much prefer a reset and look to the future. Is what it is tho.

If we had a legitimate coaching staff here I’d be more hopeful, as Drew became a HOF’er here under Sean’s tutelage. I just don’t have any faith in DA or this staff.
I think we need to be prepared for the four-year 160 mil contract.
