Do you guys think McCain would choose him if he wins the nomination? Would Huckabee take it? If you said yes to both these questions could a deal be inplace already?

Thoughts?

Yes he would if Huck's delegates put him over the top to win the nomination.

Even after that I think its a possibility.

I think he might chose Lieberman.

Or he could polar opposite and chose Rick Santorum

If he does choose Huckabee he's lost my vote. It would just be an effort to pander to the religious right and ingnore the prinicples that he claims to support.

I think the pandering started long before the hypothetical Huckabee VP. I can't see speaking at Falwell's Liberty University as anything other than pandering.

Lieberman has already said he wouldn't do it.

If he were smart he'd make peace with Romney and put him on the ticket. The "conservative" Republicans have been so supportive of Romney in an effort to derail McCain they would have to fall in line. They have been as hateful of Huckster (if not more-so) than McCain so Huckabee doesn't buy him anything with the conservative base just the religious extremists.

Yeah, I know. That's the first thing he did to disappoint me. I used to respect McCain a lot, but that started his pandering the the religious right. Recently I've been hopeful that he had broken away again, but if he chooses Huckabee as VP, it will be clear that he is under their thumb. Anway, it is far from certain that I would vote for McCain regardless of who runs with him.

disclaimer: I do Huckabee's direct mail. disclaimer 2: he hasn't done much direct mail, so I know squat though I do speak with some of his strategy people regularly. Everything I get from them is that he's going for the nomination and they think he's got a real shot. they've got a really good grassroots strategy that seems to be playing out well today in the states they were targeting.

Now, me, personally, with no bearing on what I know of the campaign, I've been thinking that Huckabee's been staying in as a spoiler in an attempt to draw votes away from Romney. I don't know if it's because he thinks he has a shot (I think he does think that), if he's just trying to stick it to Romney who's been such as asswipe or if it's an alliance with McCain. I think it's the alliance. I hope it's not because I'm not at all down with the religious right part of the party but I can see it as a strategic alliance for McCain if he needs to go against Obama. If he's going against Hillary, I hope he sees that it's a great opportunity to divorce from the old unholy alliance with the religious right that I know he sees it as. But if he's up against Obama, he'll need all the white, southern, right wing voters he can get and Huckabee might be able to deliver them.

again, this is personal speculation.

I've heard he and Huckabee were pretty close. In fact i've seen some speculation that Huckabee is pretty much working as a stalking horse for McCain at this point, splitting the social conservative vote.

All of that considered, Huckabee could be a really good VP choice for McCain, shoring McCain up in the weakest area of his campaign and helping him out in the Bible Belt considerably. But would it hurt McCain with the moderates?

You know, I don't know. It makes me a little leery. I actually don't dislike Huckabee, not in the same manner that I loath Clinton or Romney who I consider more of the same. Huckabee strikes me in roughly the same way Ron Paul does, a little nuts but "different" and therefore fundamentally likeable.

But the whole creationism thing :covri:

I would imagine that a deal is already in place. Didn't the Huckabee delegates in West Virginia jump to McCain today? I can't think of another reason to have done this.

Actually, it was just the opposite. The McCain delegates went to Huckabee in order to prevent Romney from winning.

Personally, I don't think that Huckabee being picked as VP would hurt McCain nearly as much as he would help him.

BTW, who cares if he believes in creationism? How would that affect doing his job as VP?

Yeah. If you'll notice my edit time on my post I was editing my post while you were responding.

I had a nagging feeling that I got it wrong and went off to search.
