It has come to my attention that the Jefferson Parish School Board is considering pulling
ALL student permits (Permits that allow a child to attend a school out of
district) for the 2008-2009 school year!!!

Of course, I have a vested interest in this information, I have 2 daughters
attending a school in Metairie, and they would be pushed to a school that
provides a poor enviroment for learning in contrast.

Whats worse? I was told that this 'plan' is to force a 'De-Segregation of
Schools' in Jefferson Parish... Didn't they do that in the 60's and 70's?

The simple fact is, there are a large amount of students on permits because of
varying reasons.. Expelled from a previous school, Legal reasons (restraining
orders, etc), parent work-considerations (my personal reason), and more! This
can't be allowed to happen, students have been allowed to utilize the permit
system in Jefferson Parish for over 25 years.. Why change a system that is
obviously working..

As always take this with a pound of salt, it's heresay.. But There are 2
meetings this week, one at respective schools and their parents organizations,
and the other one is at TH Harris Middle school this week on this issue..

My girls will not transfer to the other school.. The School Board will simply
force me to shift my daughters to private school.

heh....most kids with permits want them because their friends go to grace king and they live in EJ's district or something like that.....i had plenty of freinds that used the permit to basically choose which school they wanted to go to.....

They did the same thing here several years ago.
I grew up in Stonewall and went to school in Enterprise. Stonewall had no school due to desegregation and was in the Quitman school district. The problem was that Quitman was 9 miles away and Enterprise was only 3 miles away.
Anyway, many parents got releases to send their kids out of district. Eventually Enterprise got more students than they were supposed to and they started running low on money. One of the districts started a lawsuit (that eventually in involved a third district) and the whole system went away. Now students are only allowed to go to school in the district in which they live.
The cool part is that Enterprise came out on top and is now one of the top 5 schools (academically) in the state.

People request permits for more mundane reasons, such as desiring a better education for their children. Some schools offer gifted programs that may not be available at their neighborhood school. Pull those kids out of schools will result in a diminishing or elimination of gifted programs. Who suffers? Our children.

While making children go to their neighborhood schools may sound like it ma improve the overall education program, it would have the effect of segregating children and keeping them in poor school environments. Black students, for example, would not have the opportunity to leave poor performing schools, even if the child has potential greater than their peers.

Gifted programs may not have sufficient students to warrant a full time teacher, minimizing the opportunity for gifted children to explore their potential.

Reality being what it is, teachers often spend more time disciplining problem our children then they do teaching. The academic standards of our children have declined since the early 1970s. Much of that can be attributed to poor parental environment, but much of it can be inclusion of disruptive students into standard classroom environments. A disruptive child not only doesn't care about their education, but they steal from those kids who want an education.

I cannot blame parents from wanting to put their children in the best academic environment possible, even if it means permits and transporting those kids away from their neighborhood schools.

I further do not care for a school board (in this case Jefferson Parish) who makes what I consider to be a major change in school policy without adequate notification to parents. It seems they are trying to avoid parental input and act almost dictatorial.

I can understand not wanting to approve permits for those outside Jefferson Parish because it places a burden on existing facilities, and because Jefferson Parish residents are paying the property taxes to operate these schools. But the impact will harm those children who have a legitimate right to attend Jefferson Parish schools.

This decision may force parents to pull their children out of the public school arena, resulting in a decline in the academic standards of Jefferson Parish. I have many complaints with the public school education system, but this seems like an ill-advised move by a school board attempting to push through a change without adequate notice.

hey, at least i went to bonnabel

go bruins

Antipop, that is not a statement that I would have expected from you.

Welcome to Ascension Parish.

However if you know someone you can do what you want though. Sure it is the same in JP.

This is so very true. Try having a special needs child who had superior teachers and a great program than moving about 3 miles up the road (to a much nicer home and area) and hitting a school district that had to hire everything and start brand new for him. And even though you get letters from 3 separate doctors, 3 letters from previous educators and live only 3 miles farther that it would be a bad move, the school board (who has no interaction ever with your kid) tells you, you have to move. You just get ignored. It's somewhat amazing actually how uncaring a school district can be.
Still fighting about change on that one. We have been through all the phases, all the way to the superintendant of schools for the parish.

saintfan, i certainly understand what you are saying....but i know for a fact at least 10 people from my neighborhood who went to grace king because they knew people there......they should have gone to bonnabel with me, but they recieved permits to go to king.....not for better education, or special programs.....but so they could get high in the morning with their buddies from the private schools they were thrown out of

Antipop, I recognize that people want permits for reasons you outlined. I have no idea how many, and I'm sure its a significant percent. What I am saying is that many parents are looking for the best academic environment available for their children, and these parents should have that opportunity.

What I meant by the other comment was not that you went to Bonnebel. It seemed rather flipant for such an involved situation as this appears to be heading. Your comments are generally more intellectual.

i agree.....but the system was flawed from the start.....just give your aunt's address and bam, you are in a new school district....

as a parent, i certainly want the best for my son.....he's in one of the best elementary schools in jefferson parish....of course, i live two blocks from his school :hihi: .....but i would want to have a choice in the matter

and my bonnabel comment was just a friendly jab at fellow jefferson parish school grads.....

You don't have a family member or a friend that lives in the district?

I didn't think we let the likes of you into Old Metairie. Because clearly the best public education available (thank you Julie Quinn) to public school students in Jefferson Parish will be found at Metairie Academy for Advanced Studies. Middle School is going to be Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies. And High School will be a combination of Haynes and Science and Technology School.

The solution? Have smart kids and they can attend smart kid schools. :17:

My mother has been a teacher in Jefferson Parish for more than 25 years and she was telling me that at her school the big problem is that most of the "problem" kids are the kids that are being bussed from another school district and it is disruptive to the other students. Oftentimes the parents of thes kids are not proactive in their child's education and so a teacher's effort to help the kid fall on deaf ears.

My wife is a Jefferson Parish teacher who has echoed the same comments. The more disruptive students are those coming from anoutside school district whose parents seem to think their lovely little children are above discipline. I could tell you many stories relayed to me by my wife concerning things some parents have told their children, but that would change the whole course of this thread.
