Key FA Signings:

OLB Terrell Suggs- One of the leagues top pass rushers over the last few years. Has been successful as both a LB and DE for the Ravens (2nd option: Kawika Mitchell)

S Gibril Wilson- Arguable the best Safety on the market and as we won't be able to land a top CB we need help in the secondary wherever we can get it (2nd option: Ken Hamilin)

Draft:

1st Rd: CB Leodis Mckelvin- He has potential to be a very good Cornerback in the NFL and is also a great return man

2nd Rd: Curtis Lofton

2008 Starting Defense:

Smith
Thomas
Young
Grant

Suggs
Lofton
Fujita

Mckelvin
Wilson
Harper
Mckenzie

It's already been reported that Suggs is going to get slapped with the Franchise Tag.

I'd be happy with Gibril Wilson, though I don't see us making a play for him.

I know we won't get Lofton in the draft...........know why.......because we never draft players the board loves.

I'm expecting a MLB, but not Lofton.....unfortunately.

It totally sucks, but you're absolutely right...

Pick a LB that hasn't been mentioned on this board, and that will be the guy we draft... like the guy out of Miami.

FA signing BREAK "THE BANK TO GET THESE TWO FA"
CB Nnuamdi Asomugha.. Why him? he was rarely thrown at by quarterbacks or beaten by an opposing receiver in 2007. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder was picked on just 28 times all season long, and he allowed only 10 catches. As a result, Asomugha finished off the year with only 34 tackles and one INT.
DT Corey Williams... Why him? he is a MONSTER that had 7 sacks, 35 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, and 1 interception last season, and had 7 sacks in 2006 as well.
Draft
1st round
K.Rivers/DRC
2nd round
C.Lofton/J.Mayo
3rd round
E.Royal/DJ Hall
4th round
J.Adam/M.Griffin
2008 starting defense
Grant
Thomas
Williams if signed in FA
Smith
Rivers if drafted in the 1st
Lofton/Mayo if either one is drafted in 2nd
Fujita
Asomugha if signed in FA/DRC if Rivers is gone at ten
McKenzie/Young
Harper/Bullocks
Adam/Griffin if either one is drafted in the 4th
we would be loaded with depth on defense
and we got a good WR in the 3rd round also

Read any post in any thread on any board anywhere in the NFL fan community, or any news story on any site reporting on Asomugha and you will invariably read a response with the words

FRANCHISE TAG

However, on SR, I think there are only 975 posts on the subject, so it doesn't seem like that much. ;)

p.s. I see you're new, so you probably haven't had much time to peruse the board, or aren't familiar with past discussions on Nnamdi, so don't think I'm giving you flack, but all noobs are entitled to a bit of hazing. :D

Philip Wheeler, Tavares Gooden, Jonathan Goff, Jerod Mayo, Ben Moffit, Beau Bell, Quentin Groves, Erin Henderson, and Shawn Crable could all be options in the 2nd. I wouldn't be disappointed in whichever one the team decided.

Edit: If Suggs does get the tag I think we should pursue Kawika Mitchell. He had a great year

LOL, you only preceded him by 2 months...

I like most of your ideas WhoDat, nice job.
Love the Mayo/Lofton in the second.
I'm not for taking Rivers at #10, and would prefer McKelvin, DRC, then Jenkins,
I honestly think any of the 3 would be called upon to start next year, or be a primary back up at corner. If we could only trade down 3-4 spots, select the best "man" corner, and get an extra 3rd to select ANOTHER conerback, then we could select the best WR with our original pick. I think we are better off at WR than corner, so I would hope that we take a Corner with the 3rd rounder. I do agree that we need WR help as well.
Meachem's health is a big key to our draft stategy this year. Wouldn't it be nice for the Saints to surprise us this off season, and sign Javon Walker!
Agreed that we have to sign Corey Williams and personally almost ANY above average starting cornerback that is pretty good in 'man' coverage. We must get a starting cornerback in FA, and we must pick a CB in the top two rounds, if we are serious about returning to the playoffs!
I would glady pay an extra 10 bucks per ticket if we need to help Tom pay for Samuel or Asomugha. :)

nice job, OP

i still like the idea of trading our #10 to atl for hall and their 2nd & 3rd... my reasoning is (assuming both ellis and dorsey are gone), there's nobody left worth paying the money we'd have to pay for a top 10 pick and this draft appears deep at LB... also, assume for a moment that atl gets mcfadden with their (coin flip) #4... now with our #10 they're almost guaranteed either QB ryan or brohm, which gives them potential starting QB and RB off the bat, making the trade attractive to them.. it assigns a trade value to hall of 500 pts (early 2nd round pick) ... i'd also trade our 2009 2nd rounder for WR johnson from cincy, if possible

i think we should go hard for briggs, but only if he *wants* to play MLB... i'm not interested in lip service by him, but in how he really feels about it... so briggs and one of the top 3 CBs, if possible, hall and johnson via trades, then at

#36 (atl's 2nd) - OLB connor/gooden/lofton whoever is there and in that order
#42 (our 2nd) - OLB lofton/crable/adibi or MLB beaton/bell whoever is there and in that order
#68 (atl's 3rd) - CB ikegwuonu/branch or NT balmer/sims/okam/bryant whoever is there and in that order
#74 (our 3rd) - NT balmer/sims/okam/bryant (if CB taken @ 68) if there and in that order
#106 (our 4th) - OTs clady/nicks or CBs branch/godfrey or S steltz or RB forte whoever is there and in that order
#138 (our 5th) - OGs benedict/schuening or TE cottam if there and in order
#170 (our 6th) - DEs langford/harrington/merling or CB terrell or top rated C if there and in order
#202 (our 7th) - WR leggett/morgan/carter (LSU!!!) if there and in order - for speed with size and possible KR man

that would give our D at the very least a lot of competition up the middle while locking down the CB positions for the foreseeable future... and for those wondering about MM, remember he's not getting any younger and he is coming off a significant injury... also, i think he'd make a lights out FS, if he has the interest... and there's no law that says he can't beat out somebody at CB

btw, i'd ask LSU QB flynn to come in as UFA, i honestly think he'd beat out martin and palko for the #2 job if given a chance

I would never trade a high pick for ANYBODY on the Falcons roster. Much less ever trade anything to a divisional foe.. It will almost without fail bite you in the buttocks..

I wouldn't be disappointed with Tavares Gooden, he's a solid guy.
