In the 60's or something, there was a player playing in a Super Bowl or some other important game that got injured. Whatever it was that he injured (I think it was a finger or something), he was unable to return to the game. Instead of not returning to the game to help his team won, he cut whatever it was he injured off entirely. I want to say he was a safety, but I'm not 100% on that.

I think I'm not crazy and this guy exists, but I could have made it up. Help me out, please.

It wasn't in the 60's it was in the 80's

It was Ronnie Lott. I think he was going for a tackle his finger got caught in a facemask he yanks it out but the finger stayed!!!!!! Now that was football!!!!!!!

Ronnie Lott? In the sixties? What?

You're right. I appreciate it. I didn't know when it had happened, so forgive me. Thanks for the quick reply, though. The two people I'm in the room with had no idea what I was talking about when I told them the story, and I wanted a name to tell them.

READ my title comedian!!!!!

Oh, I never read those because they're not the OP's original title and not in the body of the post. Thanks for clarifying.

He cut the tip of his left pinky finger off after the 1985 season, when it was crushed tackling RB Timmy Newsome. He did so in order to continue playing football without risking further injury to the damaged finger.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Lott

So it had nothing to do with returning to a game, but to the next season.
