I was surprised not to see a thread on this, as all the local broadcasts led with this story last night. It seems there is a very real possibility (or it could just be Rush speculating) that McCain may choose Jindal as a running mate.

IMO, although this may help LA in the big picture, it would be a blow short term, because the state needs a little TLC at the local level that Jindal would provide. I would hate to see who his replacement might be. (How do we choose one, BTW?)

I saw someone mention this the other day (it was during the La primary) and someone else agreed with them that he would be a good choice. I had thought that it was pure speculation and just the flavor of the day since that's where the primary was being held.

It would be a good choice. Young to counter his age, minority to counter is whiteness, conservative to cover the doubts on his conservitivitieness.....just don't bring back Blanco.

Jindal's press secretary has issued a statement, saying the Governor is flattered, but that he has a lot of work to do in Louisiana, and that's his only focus.

"The Governor is very flattered, but obviously he has a lot of work to do here in Louisiana and that is his only focus," said Jindal Press Secretary Melissa Sellers.
That's solid writing right there. Hey, let's just say the same thing twice to take up some space. :hihi:

I don't know much about politics really, but if Jindal has aspirations for the presidency would VP really be a step up? Right now he has been a federal congressman for a very short period of time. Most people consider VP to be basically a figurehead position, usually chosen from the view of garnering more votes come election time in other-wise weak bases of support right?

A better stepping stone would be to revitalize the state of Louisiana. Two successfull terms as governor here would set him up pretty nicely. Louisiana is considered by many to be backwards and corrupt. If he makes strides here, especially with the recovery effort shedding more light on our perceived shortcomings, he will make national prominence.

Anyway, his press secretary all but quashed the rumor it seems, which is good. I've fairly excited to see what he can do here, it would be a real bummer to have him not even take office and go be VP.

On a side note, it creeps me out that Rush loves Jindal and called him the next Reagan. I hate Rush...

Highly unlikely.

Because of McCain's age, his choice of running mate will receive unusual scrutiny. Jindal is too young and looks even younger. In four years, if he has a good first term as governor, perhaps. Jindal is being looked at a rising star in the party. But he's not ready for the national stage yet.

Plus, there are many working class Reagan Democrats who would not love the choice of Jindal, Bobby's staunch social conservativism would turn off some independent voters, and Jindal does not fit the attack dog model many look for in a running mate.

This is Rush Limbaugh being Rush Limbaugh.

So Rush is now deciding who the VP is going to be......and we are buying it?

Isn't it nice to have a "rising star" as the LA governor? Personally I think if he has two good terms as governor and makes a real impact with all that needs to be accomplished, he would have to be a strong presidential candidate in 2016 (jeepers, that sounds SO far away!!!).

I don't think his age matters, as much as his inexperience. I agree he is not ready, though, but if he has a good term or 2 then perhaps.

I want him here in our state for now.

While I think it might be unlikely, I don't agree with you points.

McCain needs a social convservative on his ticket to appeal to the hesitant Republican social conservatives in the GOP. It's exactly why Huckabee is still running, and why Huckabee makes some sense as a running mate.

Jindal provides that without the blatant pandering to the Christian right that a Huckabee pick would suggest.

And if McCain gets up on that stage to debate Obama, rest assured, a youthful running mate will seem like a great idea. Mind you, I'm a McCain fan--not assured that I'm voting for him (unless Clinton gets the nod), but I fear McCain on stage against Obama will look like Methusalah.

And while risky, there's the issue of race and furthering the image of change. Jindal provides both of those things.

I don't want McCain to pick Jindal, because I want him to stay in Louisiana. But I think it would make for an unbelievably exciting election--and while it would be a very risky pick on his part, I think that if Obama gets the nomination, picking Jindal would be a great move.

If Hillary gets the nod, he can pick just about anybody reasonable, because he'll win regardless of his running mate.

Jindal would be pegged as the second coming of Dan Quayle.

I don't think McCain will pick Jindal. His best bet would be to go with the Governor of Minnesota, because that would make it very likely that he would take a blue state from the Democratic nominee.

Of course, it all depends on who the nominee is. I think Obama moves Jindal up the list and Hillary moves him down.

I hope that Jindal doesn't get the nod. It would be pretty demoralizing, and I doubt that the people of Louisiana would be thrilled with Mitch Landrieu for three years.

I agree, though I'm not so anti-Landrieu.

I think there's a potential for unprecedented material for SoonerJim in the election year. That said, I can't compare Dan Quayle to Jindal, simply because Dan Quayle may be the only speaker in the known world worse than George Bush. A clubbed baby seal can speak more articulately than he could. Jindal doesn't have such a handicap.

If not a candidate for President I could see him running for one of the Senate seats after his second term ends in 2016.

Wow, 2016 is the year I can retire!!!!! Time flys when you're having fun!!!

I never thought of McCain as looking Jewish.

If Hillary gets the nod, he can pick just about anybody

Fixed that one for you.

Otherwise, I agreed with all of your points. I think it would be an inspired move to select Jindal, but I'm hoping he doesn't.

One thing that may slow the movement down: he's Catholic, and I'm pretty sure most of the fundies would be much happier with Huckabee, who doesn't answer to the papist devil in Rome.

How can Jindal possibly fail Louisiana with what he's inheriting? The state is already pretty clean, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but he's inherited a $2,000,000,000 budget surplus from his predecessor. That would even leave him enough room to be a typical Republican and **** it all away and still come out smelling like a rose. I prefer him in Baton Rouge right now than Washington though.
