ESPN Insider is free for the time being... go over and check this out... pretty eye-opening to the "we want Asante" crowd.

Samuel's 41.3 success percentage -- the percentage of plays a player does something successful with the ball -- and 7.4 YPA last season were both steps back from his 2006 totals in those categories (7.0 YPA and 48.8 success percentage). His six interceptions were also down from 2006, when he posted career high of 10, and three of his 2007 picks came against backup quarterbacks. Samuel's drop of the potential game-winning interception in Super Bowl XLII also didn't help his cause. To put this another way, Samuel's starting spot in last Sunday's Pro Bowl looks more like it was granted on his 2006 performance than his 2007 numbers and suggests he might be worthy of a place on my annual overrated players list.

++++ Towards the bottom ++++++

On the other hand, if Asomugha and Trufant hit the market, Samuel will be only one of three big-name defenders. In this scenario, Samuel could be viewed as the No. 3 cornerback available. As such, he might be hard-pressed to get the over-the-top contract value he has been looking forward to for the past two seasons.

Read the whole article... pretty interesting.

i want trufant or nnamdi, i dont want samuel
never have, never will. and i can basically kiss nnamdi goodbye, he'll be franchised almost for sure

Well...as long as it is an obvious upgrade.

He'd be a solid addition to this team. I don't care if we overpay.

Samuel is good, very good. Having said that, I don't want to see us spend Nate Clements money to sign him. He is not THAT good.
paying that kind of money might be questionable, but imo samuel is better than clements... the more i saw him last year the more impressed i was

I agree with you actually. Clements did not have a strong year last year. Asante Samuels is a very good player. My only issue with Samuels is the amount of money he will be demanding. The Clements deal caused the price tags for top notch corners to sky rocket. If Trufant and the Raiders corner are tagged, Samuels will be the lone elite corner available. It will be a major bidding war.

I would LOVE to sign Trufant and I believe his asking price will be lower than that of Samuels. I also think that Trufant would be a better fit for our man scheme.

Asante Samuel is a good cover 2 corner, but a average at best man cover corner. He is small and fast, but not very big and strong. The same can be said about Marcus Trufant, but I like Trufant over Samuel. Asomugha, however, is one of the best, if not the best, man cover corners in the league. He is tall, strong, has good hands, and is quick. I'd also say that Nate Clements is a better overall cornerback than Asante Samuel.

I keep saying this and I will keep it up and hopefully the Saints can see right through this but Assante=David.

So did David have back to back years with the Colts where he had 10 ints. and 6 ints.? David is nowhere near the playmaker that Asante Samuel is. I know what you're thinking as far as how he fits in our scheme, but your statement is inaccurate to say the least.
