Do you own a franchise or did you start your own business? Do you wish you would have done one vs. the other? What are the pros and cons? I'm not asking this as a poll. I really want to know the best way about starting a business.

If you bought into a franchise, do you feel that you got the extra benefits for the money, or would you have done it different?

You should get the Mods to move this to the proper forum. You'll probably get a better response there anyway.

I would like to know what people think about this myself.

Franchises limit your growth, but if you start your own business, you have complete control. It may be harder to go on your own, but the rewqard has got to be greater. JMO.

My advice would be to buy an existing business already up and running if you can. Startup's are tough. Franchise seems to work - a friends brother opened a Subway and then a Dominoes and both were successes.

It also depends on the business, and the industry, and the customers. People may be willing to give "Joe's Sandwich Shop" a try, and if they like it, tell others. But if you are opening up, say, a golf equipment and repair retail shop, where the merchandise you are selling is the same as every other retailer, then their greater name recognition and communication reach are going to put you at a disadvantage.

The thread is fine here. It's a general question about business, not a specific product or service being offered.
