A disturbing undercover video showing cows too sick to stand being shoved with forklifts or dragged with chains across a cement floor at a Southern California slaughterhouse has sparked the largest beef recall in the nation's history.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture ordered a recall of 143 million pounds of beef Sunday evening from Chino-based Westland/Hallmark Meat Co., which is the subject of an animal-abuse investigation. The recall affects beef products dating back to Feb. 1, 2006 that came from the company.

That's horrible. I don't even want to see that video.

Rosie O'Donnell's show is being put back on?

mmmmm, i had a NY strip for dinner on saturday

I've seen the video, they broadcast it on our local news last week. It turns out that this slaughterhouse provides the majority of beef for the Montana school system.

You would think that maybe we could get beef from oh, I don't know....Montana? Or maybe some quality Alberta beef?

As far as the video, not as shocking as I expected, but maybe that's because of where I come from. I'm sure some would be appalled beyond words.

What's all the fuss? Give me all that recalled beef, I'll happily eat it. You think this is the first time they've done this? :D

I think that animal abuses are uncalled for. There is no reason why beef cattle can't be raised in humane conditions and slaughtered in humane ways as well. I hate the way the hides are ripped off etc but at least the animals are dead at that point. But to abuse them while they are sick and down is uncalled for. I hope these people go to jail.

Same goes for any livestock industry.

I'm not condoning their behavior, but when a cow is to the point where they are unable to walk, what do you suggest they do to move it? Should they let the cow lie there in filth and hope it gets better?

Obviously, the cattle should be attended to before they get to the point thet they are immobile, but barring that, what should they do?

A procedure could be established to give it a lethal dose of sleeping aids and it will die a peaceful death (same as any vet does when an animal needs to go down). They could then move it with a fork lift as needed.

What if the cows just stepped on a thorn? Is that really necessary?

So would that meat go to waste due to the chemical content? I'm not sure if that would have any effect or not. Its a good idea if it could be done without wasting the neat.

I have an idea....

Let's get all of that recalled meat and ship it to China.......
