In the interest of promoting more lively - but still civil - debate, I offer you this. Discuss.

Clash Over Creationism Is Evolving In Europe's Schools

By GREGORY KATZ, The Associated Press

Published: February 16, 2008

LONDON - After the Sunday service in Westminster Chapel, where worshippers were exhorted to wage "the culture war" in the World War II spirit of Sir Winston Churchill, cabbie James McLean delivered his verdict on Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

"Evolution is a lie, and it's being taught in schools as fact, and it's leading our kids in the wrong direction," said McLean, chatting outside the chapel. "But now people like Ken Ham are tearing evolution to pieces."

Ham is the founder of Answers in Genesis, a Kentucky-based organization that is part of an ambitious effort to bring creationist theory to Britain and the rest of Europe. McLean is one of a growing number of evangelicals embracing that message - that the true history of the Earth is told in the Bible, not Darwin's "The Origin of Species."

I can see the headline now, Kentucky man discovers secret of life.

Or, better yet, the headline in the London newspapers could be "What really happened to the dinosaurs? Kentucky man has the answer!"

All I can say is I am glad JP Duece made it Catholic policy to beilieve in evolution. He stated that there is already enough evidence in the Bible that God likes to work in steps.

Ken Ham? The walking, talking, missing link Ken Ham?

Are you sure? In the only speech I could find on the topic which was his address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences: On Evolution, I am more under the impression that He indicated the theories of evolution were plausible possibilities and elevates the study of Evolution from hypotheses to Theories.

Here's the text from the only speech I'm aware of from JP II:

I read about it in one of those primers we keep in the pew for visitors to the church to read. I just found it refreshing to have a religous leader who actually tried to work with the science community rather than bury his head in the sand and pretend all the overwhelming evidence supporting evolution just wasn't there.

On a personal note, I can't believe we still have this debate in 2008. How long did it take the church to believe the earth wasn't the center of the universe after physical evidence proved it was not?

I can understand not believing in evolution, but to say it's a lie is a bit of a lie itself. Isn't there enough evidence on evolution all around us? Changing and adapting is a perpetual event.

there is certainly much more evidence of evolution than evidence of the invisible man in the sky

No, no, there's proof that God exists! "He changed my life and makes me happy, so I know he's real!"

"Have you ever noticed that people who believe in creationism look rather....unevolved?"
