I keep surfing threw the internet to find some type of Saints news to see who we are looking at or who we are trying to bring back and the lastest update I can find is the Charles Grant incident and the news after that is the Reggie Bush Lawsuit and before that is the Saints playing in London.....I really dont think we are gonna be big players in free agency, I dont think that was ever the plan, I think resigning our guys are our top priorities and then we will get additional help through the Draft, i'm not saying we arent gonna sign any free agents, but I think we will let alot of players walk and resign some guys because they provide stability (Faine, Cooper, Patten, Goodwin etc)

I think thats been pretty much the premise through Sean Paytons regime, bring back the players who show they can play and target a specific player or two in free agency and find as many people as possible who can contribute through the draft, we struck out last year, but it appears we are headed for that again....

this is the website I was looking on trying to get a sniff of what the Saints had up there sleeve and ofcourse I couldnt find nothing, which resulted in me making this thread.

every football site I go to says the same thing on the Saints "homepage", nothing about free agents or the draft....I really think were just trying to resign our guys (like we should) and go after players in the draft.

Thats how average teams, like ours, become great. They build through the draft. People point to the Pats, but they were already dominant when they got those FA's last year and that dominance by and large came from good drafting.

we have to have a foundation before we can attract free agents, we starting to attain that in the 06' draft and had a few players before that, but we as Saints fans see that as arriving, but we havent yet, every team you look at they have a solid player at every position (CB, LB, DT, OL, QB, RB, WR) Pro Bowl caliber players, were starting to get that, but what we dont have are players to compliment those players, the players who skills also make them one to watch. People want to address needs in free agency because they think its the quick fix, they want to go from 7-9 to 12-4 and they think a free agent is gonna do that, and i'm not saying it wont, you have to be lucky though, cause the big names guys hardly live up to there contracts.

The way to get from 7-9 to 12-4 in my opinion is to have a good draft with players who will only get better, not sitting those drafted guys who got you to 7-9 just to bring in some 30yr old who plays the same spot and commands more money (which is why he was a free agent to begin with) and expect him to not make the mistakes the rookie or 3rd yr player made because he been in the league 9yrs...meanwhile the draft pick never gets better becuase he is just sittin and not getting game experience, except special teams.

Yeah, I totally agree with you, but that's not too much fun to watch during the offseason.

I feel like the thing that held us back last year was injuries. Get healthy, bring in a few FAs, and have a good draft and we're back on top....but that's pretty boring in February and March.

Most people are just bored.

So do what I do and watch the Hornets pwn the league.

......dont you mean watch the "Detroit Pistons" own the league?

oh that was good...so much for that torn ligament in his finger.

You want to "throw" up, you already "threw" up or you're "through" throwing up?

sorry, couldn't resist

I think he "thought" he had to "throw" up but realized that he had already "thrown" up.

I'll say this.....I don't think the Saints are going to players in the "Briggs/Samuel Sweepstakes" But there's a reason why they've brought in two older vet MLBs and it isn't because they are feverishly working to re sign Simoneau. No I believe that they are prepared to let several former starters walk and have a few FAs targeted to replace them. But they probably won't be the "names" this board will be happy with - like William James at CB. But....I would agree that the Saints are working hard to get guys like Faine and Goodwin re signed.

My thoughts about the draft? Well when Payton first arrived and looked over the roster he saw tons of holes to fill. He used both FA and draft to fill those holes. It worked out well. In '07 Payton was completely comfortable with the roster (hey why shouldn't he have been? The team was a game away from the Superbowl). There didn't seem to be many holes. So with the '07 draft he made a "luxury pick" in the first round and used the rest of picks to supplement depth. He wasn't looking for starters like '06. Now in the '08 draft he needs starters. Let's hope they scouting returns to '06 form......

Wow....thats exactly how I feel, I really believe that Payton has learned alot about building a team through his experiences before becoming a head coach and like you said, his draft reflected the way he viewed his team, last year he thought he had the pieces (yr removed from NFC Championship game) why not come back fully intact and just try and add depth and potential through free agency and the draft....I think Payton is a strong believer in getting the most outa your draft picks, last year it appeared he drafted guys who had the ability but needed time, but it was ok with him because he thought he was bringing back a division championship caliber team, there still good players, but they werent meant to contribute right away.
