Payton plans on keeping Deuce per Rotoworld.com (1 Viewer)

Without the words "after restructuring his contract" following "keeping Deuce" i'm not sold on it personally.

the Times Pic noted this morning that Duece's cap hit this year was very manageable...around $3 million...not sure why everyone feels he has to restructure...further, I think the cap hit will be more if we cut him due to the acceleration of his signing bonus which is currently spread out over the next few years....the only reason we would let him go is because he did not fully recover...then we''d probably IR him/..

I think Deuce will have more value as a locker room guy rather than a his running ability. I've never had any torn knee ligaments (knock on wood), but man its gotta be tough to come back from 2 (one in each knee even)... at age 29... I'm prayin for ya Deuce.

this is one situation where Payton's super-loyalty to his players is a good thing.

This is the same info reported in the other thread. Plus Rotoworld is nothing more than a link site to Newspaper articles. Mike Triplette of the Times pic is who wrote this.

I will be shocked if Deuce is not on this team next year after restructuring his contract...

Thanks for clearing that up.

What in that statement makes you think duece is staying. Payton said what he had to say at this juncture. Who knows what is going to happen with Duece. I would even venture to say that we may get a free agent RB even before a DT or LB. the Main reason we lost this season was defense. the same defense for the most part from the year before that ranked 11th. the reason that Defense looked so much better then was in part due to a solid contribution from deuce and reggie sustaining drives and Keeping them off hte field. Dont be Surprized in a year that has deepth at RB that we dont aquire one by draft trade or FA. The complete package is what we need. and if we dont gwet the FA or rookie players on D than we need we darn well bettter be able to keep them off the field as we did in 06

Unless the Saints shock us all and break the bank on a guy like Briggs or Samuel, they will be able to handle his salary this season without problem. They may would like for him to take less, and if it were because the Saints were big players in free agency and upgrading the team, then and only then should he consider it, which I believe he would.

"Planning on keeping Deuce" isn't a definitive statement. I think many took that as "Deuce will be here no matter what" and that's not true. If Deuce doesn't re-negotiate his contract he won't be back for the regular season. I'm sure the front office wants to monitor his rehab progress and make a decision when they have more information, but it's almost certainly going to involve renegotiating his contract.

This is another situation where Payton's super-loyalty to his players is NOT a good thing.

Seriously, I think this is where good teams separate from great ones, making decisions about beloved players with no bias. Personally, as much as I love Deuce, I don't see him contributing to his team at his current contract value. Business sense suggests that he should be asked to restructure or let go. I would hate to see the running game disappear because we didn't address the problem in the offseason. Depending on a close-to-30 back with two knee surgeries is seriously negligent. I hope Deuce the best though, and I hope he has a killer year in light of this info. Go Saints!

Restructuring is a given. The Saints and Deuce both know that its inevitable. We all have faith in Deuce, but ANY running back coming off of 2 blown knees in 3 years has to be honest with himself regarding salary expectations. I highly doubt that Deuce can go anywhere else in the NFL and start camp as the #1 back - I believe Payton will abide by the unwritten rule that a player cant lose his job to injury and on top of that he is loyal to his players (see Mark Simoneau).
