This actually ties into some posts in another thread. Given that that thread is about another topic, I thought I would bring them over here with this news story I just saw for discussion.

Believe that the right-winger hate machine will be fuled to the hilt. What you see coming now from the Clinton camp is chickenfeed. I expect McCain to be above the fray and condemn it at every opportunity. But the backroom hacks will go after Obama on religion and the fact that he is a black man.
Agreed. I would think (well, hope) McCain will be appalled by it all, but consider the beating his taken from the very same elements over the past 8 years, it's obvious he has zero clout/control over that "part" of the Republican Party (which I collectively refer to as "Conservative Talk Radio" but, of course, embodies more then those just most visible elements).

Speak of the devil, I see this

In a possible foreshadowing of a potentially bruising general election campaign, a speaker who introduced presidential candidate John McCain at a rally here today accused Barack Obama of sympathizing with "world leaders who want to kill us" and invoked Obama's middle name -- three times calling him "Barack Hussein Obama."

. . .

McCain quickly distanced himself from the remarks, which he did not hear, saying that using Obama's middle name in repetition like that was inappropriate. "I absolutely repudiate such comments and again, I will take responsibility," he said, calling the use of Obama's middle name inappropriate. "It will never happen again. It will never happen again."

This general election will depress and disillusion a lot of Americans. Michelle Obama may have spoken too soon.

McCain is making himself look stupid. McCain has been a moderate and now wants to be a conservative. It's like a football team owning the other and then with 3 min left you go into prevent defense. Why should mccain change now? McCain has obvious differences from obama. he doesnt need to invoke his middle name as a stump speech.

Yeah, I think it's going to get particularly ugly. I think Obama's campaign summed up best the only real "hope" for it

"We appreciate Sen. McCain's remarks," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton. "It is a sign that if there is a McCain-Obama general election, it can be intensely competitive but the candidates will attempt to keep it respectful and focused on issues."

As long as McCain and Obama stay above it I guess there's reason for optimism.

Obama can end all of this inuendo with a simple name change. I suggest Cliff Huxtable. His wife can be Claire Huxtable. She's already an attorney.

I disagree. The way it is shaping up, and as long as both candidates repudiate any malicious attacks made by their respective party's fringe elements, makes me believe that this general election will be one of the more substantive ones that we've had in recent memory.

McCain won't be able to stop the extreme right from emphasizing Obama's full name (along with the implications) and Obama won't be able to stop the extreme left from pointing out McCain age and his stay in the Hanoi Hilton (along with the implications). That's nothing new in any race. The important thing is that the candidates themselves not only stay above it, but repudiate those tactics.

How exactly is the left going to use McCain's POW status against him? If anything, it is one of McCain's biggest assets. One could argue that he helped to catapult himself back into the race when he said he was "tied-up" during Woodstock. Even his Christmas ad highlighted an experience he had when he was a POW.

If the left starts to use McCain's service against him, they can kiss independents, and the all-important white male vote goodbye. McCain does have some skeletons though, which could muddy the waters.

One thing to remember, if we do have a McCain/Obama race, is that they have a history of not getting along and we could see it spiral out of control. I hope not, and I have felt since the start of this campaign that Obama/McCain provides the best chance for a civil race.

I specifically said extreme left and they have tried to use it against him. Something along the lines of "the stress of his captivity has made him unhinged" or things to that effect.

Nobody (at least not me) said that the average left leaning voter would use that tactic, or think that it would work, or believed that. Just like the average right leaning voter doesn't care what Obama's full name is.

Yeah, but what would he be trying to hide?

Being ashamed of the name your momma gave you is un-American. Ask Cassius Clay.

Back in 2000 Rove floated rumors that McCain's torture experience had made him "mentally unstable".

No, I'm not kidding
Literature began to pepper the windshields of cars at political events suggesting that Mr. McCain had committed treason while a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, that he was mentally unstable after years in a P.O.W. camp, that he was the homosexual candidate

So, it is possible apparently (though I never would have thought that).

Well, it is much easier to attack a war hero from the right than from the left (see: Kerry/Bush 2004, and I guess also McCain in 2000).

I think McCain's mental stability will be an issue, as it has been in the past with many Presidential candidates. He has a tendancy to fly off the hinge ("Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran!") A Muskie moment could doom his candidacy, especially since there is an issue of age- fair or not.

I just don't see anyone affiliated with the Democratic nominee being able to attack McCain for his service. It would be stupid.

no they just going to attach mccains age. he's too old. he is the past, obama is the future.

all that matters is vote for who puts the most money in your pocket.
