Jon V will have to be protected in order to maximize his effectiveness. In the past... our MLB (Siminieau) was asked to take on blockers in order to free up others to make the play, but I'm hoping the scheme changes in order to allow our LBs to flow to the ball and make the play.

I know Hollis can eat up blocks, but I'm not sure how good Bryan Young would be at it.

So my question is... should the FO sign another space eater before the draft (Booger, Ted Washington, Ryan Sims)? or should we go into the draft hoping one of the big 2 would drop far enough to make a trade.

IMHO I doubt either of those two are around after the 6th pick.

So what do y'all think will happen?

How bad would it be to put Clancy AND Thomas on at the same time. I guess they wouldn't have enough speed to put a rush on the QB....but we weren't really getting that last year, either. At least that way the OL will be busy on the DL.....?

Too Madden-esque?

I too hope they get someone that can eat blocks. In the 4-3, you really need that because you are one LB less. Free him up to be a "wildcard" out there. Just a theory, but whatever.

I was thinking the same thing... those 2 would defenitely clog the middle.

The Ravens did alright with Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa... not that Clancy and Thomas are in the same league as those guys, but the theory is there.

I would like us to pursue Booger McFarland. I think he still has some left in the tank, but we need to get younger at DT by drafting one.

I think some of these moves will allow the Saints to play more cover 2 schemes and not have to worry about getting gashed by the run. Think of the defense we ran in 2000. You've got a guy that can eat up blockers in Thomas, two speedy DEs in Smith and Grant, a 3 tech type DT in Young and a MLB that can run sideline to sideline making plays. Vilma may not be big, but he's usually too quick for guards and centers to get ahold of. I don't think we'll move to the two fat guy scheme we tried to employ after we let Glover walk.

Agree on Booger, besides he would be a good mentor for the young DT we hopefully draft

Young is a 3-Tech and Hollis is a NT two completely different positions.

Vilma is a 4-3 LBer which as I understand is one of the big reason the J-E-T-S let him go, since they transistioned to a 3-4.

If he can stay healthy he can be good in our current system. However, healthy I think is a big issue. A bargain for a 4th, but I still hope we snag a rookie LBer in the 1st day of the draft.

One that can learn from Vilma.

The problem is we would then need our LBs to create the pass rush because the QB would be free to step up into the pocket without fear of a middle pass rush from the DTs.
