Sorry for the thread but looking for some help. I have heard more than one story about what we are giving up. I have heard that it is a 4th this year and either a 3rd or a 4th for next, but I can only find that it is a conditional 4th for 2009! If this is the case WHAT A DEAL!!!

Here a couple of links:

IN NOLA.COM TODAY:
New Orleans agreed to a deal with the New York Jets on a trade for linebacker Jonathan Vilma (surrendering a reported conditional '09 draft pick). http://blog.nola.com/gladow/2008/03/saints_moves_looking_good_so_f.html

On NFL.COM:
Jonathan Vilma (LB) traded (for a conditional 2009 4th-round pick).

???

I saw on ESPN, (no link) that is was a "Conditional 09 pick ( 4th or 5th)", just like that on the ticker.

It has been confirmed (as far as I know) as a 4th this year and it can turn into a 2nd or 3rd next year. If it does indeed become a 2nd or 3rd next year then we get the Jets 4th in 2009.

GM Mike Tannenbaum declined to characterize the Faneca negotiations. Tannenbaum, in his third offseason, is trying to improve a team that bottomed out at 4-12. He also finalized the Jonathan Vilma trade to the Saints, receiving a fourth-round pick in the upcoming draft for the injured linebacker. If Vilma reaches certain playing-time levels and signs an extension with the Saints, the Jets would get a second- or third-round pick in 2009. In that case, they would send a fourth-rounder in '09 to the Saints as payback for this year's pick.

Thanks! Why does the NFL site have this wrong?

Good question. I think its because there has been no official press release as to these terms and the NFL site just has what was initially speculated on as the terms of the agreement and they decided not to update it when further info came out.

How can a 4th this year turn into a 2nd or 3rd next year?

Edit: I see...we get their 4th next year if that happens.

I really don't think anyone knows for sure because there are conflicting reports all over the internet

so if he does good enough this year they will get our 2nd or 3rd rounder and we will get there 4th rounder?....and if not, we just lose out on the 4th we gave this year?

I think we lose out on this year's 4th no matter what. If next year's 4th gets escalated to a 2nd or 3rd, then we get the Jets 4th as compensation.

I think we gave up this years 4th. Done.

Now if he resigns and meets certain playing time requirements they ALSO get a 2nd or 3rd next year and then give us their 4th from next year.

OR

We dont resign him and they get nothing in addition to the 4th from this year we gave them.

However, I believe Loomis said on the radio during one of the interviews that the pick could be a 3rd or 4th (not a 2nd) next year. So, I :dunno:

I read its a 4th this year, and a 2nd or 3rd next year depending on if he resigns, and player stats. If they do get our 2nd-rd we get their 4th in 09. Its a pretty awkward deal, but Its cool that we get a pick back.
