Red Ring of Failure

Is your Xbox 360 still working? You must be one of the lucky ones.

Over 18 million Xbox 360s have sold through since the console's launch in November 2005, but just how many of those are still working? Squaretrade, a company that specializes in providing warranty support to purchasers of electronic goods from various manufacturers, claims 16% of Xbox 360s experience a hardware failure within six to ten months after a warranty purchase. Three out of every five failures were for the infamous "Red Ring of Death" general hardware failure error, a problem often linked to overheating.

The Xbox's figures compare poorly to competing consoles, which have a failure rate of around 3% -- and if anything, the Squaretrade figure underestimates the scale of the Xbox 360's reliability issues. It's a good bet that some buyers of Squaretrade warranties went straight to Microsoft after experiencing hardware issues and don't factor into the 16% number. On its company blog, Squaretrade pointed out that failure rates are "certain to go up" as the machines in their study group grow older.

Microsoft is cagey about coughing up official failure rate figures, which has lead some commentators to speculate about the actual severity of the problem. Luke Plunkett, a blogger on respected games news site Kotaku, said in a recent post that if the real failure rate wasn't in the 30-40% range, he'd "wolf down humble pie until his sides split."

ok. i have 2 360's so when one is getting replaced/reparied, i still can play the other one.

Waste of money much

That is if you aren't being totally sarcastic.

Well i paid $200 for my original 360 and only $100 for second one. My orginal 360 lasted 18 months before it got the RRD.

When it works i love it. As long as the repairs/replacements are free, i'm a happy customer.

For what you paid i guess it makes sense.

Well gosh as long as you say it makes sense we can all sleep well tonight!

Seriously, did you start this thread to bait Jeff Miller into some kind of console flame war.....because from what you posted on the other thread it appears that way. Maybe that's not your intention but it sure looks that way.....

Yeh, i never pay full price for consoles, not after going thru the 3DO expirence. I usually combine gift cards, promotions, discount cards together and pick up hardware for half price. Its kinda a pain to do it that way, but it can be done.

For myself, the games have alwasy driven me to which console. I nearly at one point got a PS2 for the resident evil games, but when they were released on dream cast i didn't have too.

xbox live is the real kicker for me. its completely changed gaming for me, infact i still have several games i've never completed the single player campain for because i enjoy the multiplayer matches more.

Happy as long as repairs are free? aren't you unhappy you have to send it in?

nah...it sucks to have to send it in....but at least M$ is backing the product......lots of companies havn't in the past when dealing with consumer electronics....namely Sony when dealing with the "disk read error" problems that PS2's went through and who could forget how the connectors would wear out on the old NES....or how you had to blow into the cartridges to get them to work....ahhh...the good ole days!

Me? I love both my PS3 and both of my 360's! I'm just glad that the PS3 is going to get some game love this year.....last year was pretty barren for me because I mostly play sports games....and Madden was horrible on the pS3.

should i be? when my $1,000 RCA 36" tv power supply died it cost me $300 to fix that. I've had hard discs, monitors and dvd drives die in my pc, and they weren't replaced. My $500 sony DVD player died and got nothing for that.

So yeh, with a three year warrenty at no cost to me, thats a heck of a better deal than i've ever seen with any electronics component. Course it could be argued that had Microsoft not extened the warrenty, they would have been driven out of the console market completely.

and like i said, i have a back up, so i can ship away with no interruption in gaming.

I see your point. I just would probably sell it after sending it in. I use to have a 360 but sold it a while back. Now alot of my friends have it and I might buy one again just to play online with them. Madden was awful on PS3. Don't even know if I am going to buy it this year.

Edit: my friend had to go through 4 of them and I am hesitant to get one again.

At first, yes. But I figured we could turn it into a civil discussion :hihi:

Well I don't game as often as I did in HS, I just don't have the time. So The PS3 is all I need. I'm a movie buff and the Blu Ray player is like a gift from heaven. Plus when I see a game I like I'll get it, buying about 4-6 games a year max will do me just fine.

Also online I don't get it. I don't need to talk to players online when I play. Just connect me and let me play. That's it.

to fair i think Madden has been terrible on all the systems. It was pretty fun on the Wii though at first, but it only took 3 game to realize it was no different than any other Madden game. At least for me.

I really like 2K8, but i admit i haven't played that in while either.
