Tim said that on the very first play of his rookie season, Mike Singletarry came up to him as soon as the offense broke the huddle and told him not to crash down, to stay "home" instead of be aggresive because a reverse was coming his way. As predicted, Ryan followed Singletarry's instructions and recorded a tackle for an 11 yard loss on his first play of his pro career. Later, he found out Singletarry knew to do this from film study.

How this relates to us and our defense is that we now have a guy who studies film just as passionately as Singletarry. Vilma has been a film buff since Miami, and by his own mouth is the reason he was Defensive rookie of the year and two time probowler. What this means is now we have a semi coach, or defensive cooridinator if you will, on the field telling our players what is coming, where to be, when not to be aggressive, when to be, and so on and so forth. I am not sure most of us realize how much of an impact Vilma will have for us. It will be akin to Drew Brees taking over for Brooks. Sure, he can't do it all on his own, but his direction and play makes those around him better, and when things go well, confidence gets built, and when we go into a game knowing we will win instead of hoping, we will be a force for years to come, on both sides of the ball.

Simoneau is no mental midget himself. He supposedly got the highest wonderlic score of any linebacker ever. Vilma should be a fantastic upgrade if healthy, but I wouldn't expect his football smarts to be the main reason. I'm just sayin....

Vilma was on 6 days to Sunday on NFL network during his rookie year and they showed him watching film probably 60 percent of the show. He truly is a student of the game.

We could run a 3-4 with Vilma and Simoneau in the middle and win......a quiz bowl

Simoneau might be smart on paper, But i wonder what happen on the field !!!

I see you listen to sirius as much as I do, I think Mark Simenou studies film,
everyone says how smart he is, but talent at getting to the runner , tackling
I think he just couldn't blitz, shanle couldnt very well either, so not many were called, they just didn't work with our personel, But now we have Vilma, Morgan, and maybe a draft pick that is good at blitzing. if we have success we will call them more, and get more sacks

According to Mora....Mills was the exact same way. I hope this really pans out!

I knew it was one of the Dome Patrol. On the NFL films top linebacking units they said that one of them would call out every single play that the offense was about to run before they snapped the ball. I guess that was Mills.

Taking talent and ability into consideration Vilma is a major upgrade over Simoneaux. If Vlma does for the defense what Brees did for our offense we are in for a great ride. Moving forward, if we get 2 starters out of the draft, (DT, LB, or CB) our offense will win the games for us and we just need to make sure our defense doesn't lose it for us.

He knew where to be, but couldn't get there. Too slow, but way a good drag down tackler after the runner got the first down.

It was Mills. I thought that was amazing. I also liked Roger Craig's take on Vaughn Johnson hitting him so hard on the first play from scrimmage before anyone knew who he was. "Who is that guy? Whoever he is, DO NOT let him hit me like that again!" That was funny.

Mora used to call Sam Mills a defensive coach on the field. He knew that Mills would coach some day. Jim Henderson used to call Vaughn Johnson the supercollider when we were in the running to get some subatomic particle lab here. (We didn't.) I haven't seen many who can deliver a blow consistently like "Meat."

We are going to see a better D with Vilma & Morgan back there commanding.....it's been way to long since we had a presence at that position who can change games for the better.

There is a difference between a standardized test like the wonderlick, and being able to break down a teams tendencies and remember which plays they run at which down and distances our of which formations. This takes dedication and passion and hours of study. The Wonderlick takes none of this. It is just a measure of how your brain operates. I scored very high on SAT and ACT and went to LSU on academic sholarship, but my priorities and passions were between my legs, not my ears. Wonderlick shows what you are born with, not what you work for. Comparing Vilma and Simeneauo is like apples and oranges. Bad comparison.
