The New Orleans Saints have a lot of players to be excited about, but also a potentially massive issue as they head toward the 2024 season.

Who will start at either tackle spot? The answer is up in the air, and if anything it's become more in flux with a negative update on Ryan Ramczyk's knee issue for the right side. On the left, the team appears set to give Trevor Penning a chance to earn that job, but there's little in the way of a fallback should he flounder again, as Bobby Hebert explained on WWL this week.

"You’ve got to win in the trenches," Hebert told Mike Detillier and Charlie Long on SportsTalk. "You can ask Sean Payton or Drew Brees this, every fan follows the football, but when we were truly special, we were a top five offensive line year in, year out and controlling the line of scrimmage with the run and the pass." ...

One of the biggest needs entering the 2024 NFL Draft for the New Orleans Saints comes at the offensive tackle position. While it’s likely the the Saints will stay put at no. 14 in the first round to take offensive tackle, there is a really intriguing target for the team if they do decide to move back to acquire more draft capital.

That player is Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton.

Guyton started his collegiate career at TCU in 2020 where he spent his first two years mostly as a back up. His biggest highlight during his time came in a game against Iowa State where he caught a 6-yard...

How well have the Saints drafted in the first round in recent years?

The New Orleans Saints have had a shaky record in the first round in recent drafts. They’ve added players who have made an immediate impact but also drafted guys who would barely see playing time with the team. Here is a review of the Saints’ recent NFL Draft history in the first-round.

The Saints acquired the 29th overall pick in 2023 via a trade with the Denver Broncos for the rights to former head coach Sean Payton. New Orleans would draft DT Bryan Bresee out of Clemson despite the team having a bad track record with defensive linemen in the first round. Bresee had a promising rookie...

The New Orleans Saints rarely trade up, but when they really like a prospect, they’ll make it happen. Is there someone in this class that the Saints will move up for?

Whether it be a new wide receiver or a tight end, the Black and Gold need more depth in the pass catcher department. Fortunately, there’s a lot to choose from.

Here’s a look at a full first round mock of the NFL Draft. All the questions people asked about where certain players may go have been answered.

7-round Saints mock draft, post-free agency edition

The dust has settled on free agency and we’re finding ourselves just two weeks away from the 2024 NFL draft. And the New Orleans Saints still need some help before they’ll be able to field a starting lineup in the fall. To get an idea of how they can achieve that goal, we’ve updated our seven-round mock draft with fresh picks and some new moves for the Saints.

This isn’t exactly what we would do (which would be trade down in the first round and get more picks in the second or third frame). It’s based off what we know about the team’s history and their tendencies on draft day with Mickey Loomis calling the shots and cutting deals with other teams. So with that in mind, let’s get to it:

NFL introducing new position-specific helmets in 2024

  • News source: Darrion Gray

The NFL has unveiled a dozen new helmets for players to choose from in 2024, 8 of which are specifically for quarterbacks and linemen on both sides of the ball. Helmets for quarterbacks are meant to limit the impact to the back of the head when falling backwards. Offensive and defensive linemen collide every snap, so their helmets are meant to protect the front of the head. New Orleans Saints players have been quick to adopt these new equipment options in the past, so we may see more of them this season.

Quarterbacks and linemen are the only positions with helmets catered to them, with...

New Orleans Saints free agent profile: Chase Young

Chase Young comes to the New Orleans Saints after half a season with the San Francisco 49ers. San Francisco picked up the former number 2 overall pick at the 2023 trade deadline. Young’s career hasn’t gone how many expected. After winning the defensive rookie of the year, Young never took that next jump partially due to injury. After having 7.5 sacks as a rookie, he’s totaled 9 sacks in his last 28 games.

This is a mutually beneficial relationship that’s unlikely to extend beyond the end of the year. Young is on a prove-it deal to see if he can jumpstart his career and bring some...

New Orleans Saints free agent profile: Oli Udoh

Oli Udoh comes over to New Orleans after five years with the Minnesota Vikings. His experience ranges from interior to exterior, right side to left side. He’s primarily been a backup in his career, except in 2021 where he started 16 of 17 games. Ironically, that was the season Klint Kubiak was the Vikings’ offensive coordinator. That familiarity likely played a big part in Udoh picking the Saints in free agency.

Udoh has iterated his desire to start. The likeliest path seems to be at left guard, prior to the draft. If the Saints don’t believe in Trevor Penning, they’re planning on...

Could the Saints trade into the top 10?

The New Orleans Saints love to trade up in the draft, no matter where they are. However, the team makes more mistakes when they trade up for a player who just fits a need instead of focusing on talent and need. It is best to trade when you see a player as a top-tier prospect in an achievable range. An example would have been if the Saints traded up for Mahomes, who they viewed as a can’t-miss prospect, or when they traded up for Ryan Ramczyk. Obviously, there are times when this does not work, but that is just how the draft goes. In this year’s NFL draft, there is potential for this to...
