Prominent changes include new kickoff rule and removal of 'hip drop' tackle

By - New Orleans Saints

The NFL has approved a number of rule changes at the annual Owners Meeting in Orlando, Florida, notably including implementing a new kickoff rule as well as penalizing the 'hip drop' tackle.

The kickoff will be the change fans notice from the very first snap of the season as the play will look radically different as it has in years past.

"We've basically taken a 25 yard running head start away from the kickoff team," Saints special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi said. "They are now up on the 40-yard line and everybody's going to start when the when the ball's touched either by the ground or the player."

Rizzi and several other special teams coaches around the NFL have been working on this for a couple years as the play was diminishing in prominence due to rule changes over the years to make it safer. As late as 2010, the return rate of kickoffs was 80%, but in 2023 it was down to 20% according to Rizzi.

"We feel like we've revived a dying play," Rizzi said. ...

Saints hosted Penn State pass rusher Chop Robinson for pre-draft visit

One of the New Orleans Saints’ pre-draft visits almost slipped under the radar. Penn State pass rusher Demeioun “Chop” Robinson told the Daily Collegian’s Sam Woloson that he visited the Saints the week before the school’s March 15 pro day; the same week in which the team met with Northern Iowa defensive tackle Khristian Boyd at their headquarters in Metairie. Robinson is an impressive athlete, and he can move and make plays unlike anyone else the Saints have at defensive end.

Robinson, 21, weighed in at a hair under 6-foot-3 and 254 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine, and he put up great...

When Jason Kelce announced his retirement from the NFL in early March, the longtime Eagles center knew he’d have no shortage of opportunities in his post-playing career. And we could be nearing an answer on what his life after football will look like.

According to a report from The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, ESPN is pursuing Kelce to serve as an analyst for Monday Night Countdown — the Monday Night Football pregame show. Marchand added that ESPN would likely have Kelce replace Robert Griffin III on the pregame show as ESPN execs think Griffin has “leveled off” since being hired by the...

On Tuesday, March 26th, New Orleans Saints kicker Blake Grupe, members of the Saints Cheer Krewe and Sir Saint attended the Ochsner Book Fair at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in New Orleans to help encourage the students to read.

Ochsner Health has collaborated with NOLA Public Schools, Scholastic Books and the Saints to support Orleans Parish public schools by hosting three student book fairs in March and April to promote the importance and joy of reading. Ochsner will donate 300 books per school, and each student will receive three books to take home at no cost to them or the school...

CSC Poll Results: Which remaining free agent would you like to see the Saints sign?

In this week’s CSC poll, we voters asked which of these remaining free agents would you like the New Orleans Saints to sign:

After 366 votes, former Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons won with 50.3% of the vote. The Saints released starting safety Marcus Maye earlier this offseason leaving them thin at safety. Simmons is a 4-time second team All-Pro at safety and has 30 career interceptions. The Saints have the space to sign him now as they have finally got themselves below the cap. They would have to find a way to fit him with Tyrann Mathieu, as they both play free safety, but if you...

Free agency has been in full effect for a few weeks now and while the New Orleans Saints started off $80M over the cap, in just a short period of time, they have managed to restructure several contracts, get under the cap as well as sign and re-sign a few needed players. Most notably, DE Chase Young, the former #2 overall NFL draft pick who was on several team’s radars. There are sure to be more moves made but as for now, we want to hear from you. What grade would you give the Saints so far in free agency?

Former New Orleans Saints head athletic trainer Dean Kleinschmidt has been named as one of the 2024 recipients of the Awards of Excellence from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Kleinschmidt began his NFL career as an intern for the 1967 and 1968 Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. He came to the Saints in 1969 as the assistant athletic trainer. In 1971, at the age of 23, he was promoted to head athletic trainer, becoming the NFL’s youngest head athletic trainer in history. Kleinschmidt remained with the Saints until 2000. In 2002, he received the Joe Gemelli Fleur De Lis Award from the...

Here’s a name to file away for draft day: Jordan Miller. Sportskeeda’s Tony Pauline reports that the New Orleans Saints were one of two teams to spend “extensive time” interviewing the defensive tackle after SMU’s pro day for 2024 NFL draft prospects on Wednesday. The other team, Pauline adds, was a division rival — the Carolina Panthers.

Snubbed by the NFL Scouting Combine after an impressive week of practices at the Shrine Bowl, Miller weighed in at 6-foot-2 and 304 pounds and hit above-average marks in all of his athletic testing drills.

Miller transferred to SMU from Miami as a...

2024 NFL draft: Saints coach works one-on-one with LSU linebacker

The New Orleans Saints had a heavy presence in Baton Rouge on Wednesday for the LSU pro day. Some coaches even got the chance to work one-on-one with prospects in the 2024 NFL draft. One Saints assistant who took advantage of the time was linebackers coach Mike Hodges, who put Omar Speights through his paces.

Speights did not have the best season at LSU, but it’s almost hard to hold it against him with how much everyone regressed last season for the Tigers on the defensive side of the ball. Coming into 2023, he was an All-Pac-12 linebacker at Oregon State and had some hype around him...

The New Orleans Saints, fresh off a 9-8 season, are projected to take a step back in 2024 according to the preseason win totals from DraftKings Sportsbook.

With the news about Ryan Ramczyk’s knee, the need for protection upfront becomes even more important for the future of the franchise.

The Black and Gold will be upgrading their food facilities, but it had little to do with the team’s report card.

The Saints' projected win total is too low compared to the rest of the NFC South

The New Orleans Saints have the third-worst projected win total in the NFC South, sitting at 7.5 wins with DraftKings Sportsbook. And that’s too low compared to the rest of the NFC South, even if Kirk Cousins might be losing playoff games for the Atlanta Falcons instead of the Minnesota Vikings from now on.

There are some key things that still need to happen for the Saints to say they improved this offseason, but initially the win total seems to be a little low. New Orleans finished at 9-8 last season despite all of the turmoil that they faced. It’s hard to imagine the team finishing with...

LSU held their Pro Day in Baton Rouge today with numerous NFL coaches and scouts in attendance to get a good look at potential 2024 NFL draft candidates.

The most notable player participating was LSU QB and Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. While Daniels’ performance drew lots of positive attention, he stood out for another very impressive reason. Daniels wore a hoodie with the #3 honor of his fellow Tigers teammate Greg Brooks Jr., who was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer. Brooks underwent a surgery to remove the tumor and is currently in the process of...
