The New Orleans Saints have a lot of players to be excited about, but also a potentially massive issue as they head toward the 2024 season.

Who will start at either tackle spot? The answer is up in the air, and if anything it's become more in flux with a negative update on Ryan Ramczyk's knee issue for the right side. On the left, the team appears set to give Trevor Penning a chance to earn that job, but there's little in the way of a fallback should he flounder again, as Bobby Hebert explained on WWL this week.

"You’ve got to win in the trenches," Hebert told Mike Detillier and Charlie Long on SportsTalk. "You can ask Sean Payton or Drew Brees this, every fan follows the football, but when we were truly special, we were a top five offensive line year in, year out and controlling the line of scrimmage with the run and the pass." ...

NFL introducing new position-specific helmets in 2024

The NFL has unveiled a dozen new helmets for players to choose from in 2024, 8 of which are specifically for quarterbacks and linemen on both sides of the ball. Helmets for quarterbacks are meant to limit the impact to the back of the head when falling backwards. Offensive and defensive linemen collide every snap, so their helmets are meant to protect the front of the head. New Orleans Saints players have been quick to adopt these new equipment options in the past, so we may see more of them this season.

Quarterbacks and linemen are the only positions with helmets catered to them, with...

New Orleans Saints free agent profile: Chase Young

Chase Young comes to the New Orleans Saints after half a season with the San Francisco 49ers. San Francisco picked up the former number 2 overall pick at the 2023 trade deadline. Young’s career hasn’t gone how many expected. After winning the defensive rookie of the year, Young never took that next jump partially due to injury. After having 7.5 sacks as a rookie, he’s totaled 9 sacks in his last 28 games.

This is a mutually beneficial relationship that’s unlikely to extend beyond the end of the year. Young is on a prove-it deal to see if he can jumpstart his career and bring some...

New Orleans Saints free agent profile: Oli Udoh

Oli Udoh comes over to New Orleans after five years with the Minnesota Vikings. His experience ranges from interior to exterior, right side to left side. He’s primarily been a backup in his career, except in 2021 where he started 16 of 17 games. Ironically, that was the season Klint Kubiak was the Vikings’ offensive coordinator. That familiarity likely played a big part in Udoh picking the Saints in free agency.

Udoh has iterated his desire to start. The likeliest path seems to be at left guard, prior to the draft. If the Saints don’t believe in Trevor Penning, they’re planning on...

Could the Saints trade into the top 10?

The New Orleans Saints love to trade up in the draft, no matter where they are. However, the team makes more mistakes when they trade up for a player who just fits a need instead of focusing on talent and need. It is best to trade when you see a player as a top-tier prospect in an achievable range. An example would have been if the Saints traded up for Mahomes, who they viewed as a can’t-miss prospect, or when they traded up for Ryan Ramczyk. Obviously, there are times when this does not work, but that is just how the draft goes. In this year’s NFL draft, there is potential for this to...

Here’s a new one. On Monday, the New Orleans Saints announced their partnership with Seaside Events to launch the Saints Legends Fan Cruise in April 2025, which you can read more about here. The seven-night cruise on the Norwegian Getaway will tour the Western Caribbean with stops in Mexico, Belize, and Honduras.

What’s unique is that this gives diehard Saints fans the opportunity to interact with some of their favorite players at meet and greets, group dinners, panel discussions, and autograph sessions, among other events. Additionally, the first 50 cabin bookings will receive seats at...

Bauer’s first round mock NFL draft

With the NFL Draft just around the corner, I thought it was time for me to post my first-round mock. Below is what I think could happen on April 25th.

After being the one best, if not then the best, quarterback in college football the past two years, Caleb Williams won’t have to wait long at all to hear his name called on draft day. It seems that everyone and their mom already knows that the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner will be the first off the board.

Williams is similar to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He has amazing arm strength and has an insanely impressive pocket...

A new special teams rule was approved at this year’s league meetings. Without going into the details, the rule change will make kickoffs safer while also having more kickoffs returned. The New Orleans Saints’ special teams coordinator, Darren Rizzi, was the main person who pushed for this change. Rizzi is one of the top respected special teams coordinators in the league, and over the years, we have seen the Saints have outstanding special teams players. This side of football will be a lot more impactful than it has been over the years, and if teams can take advantage of this, they could...

Now that Jameis Winston has moved on and Jake Haener appears to be the backup for the New Orleans Saints, could another rookie come in this year to fill a spot on the depth chart?

The south Louisiana native and Florida State star put himself in position to be a second round pick in the NFL Draft. Could he get picked up at 45 and return home? Here’s why he could be a good fit.

Lets take a look at my mock draft for the Black and Gold and see who New Orleans could end up grabbing.

PHOENIX — Saints legend Drew Brees joined the NCAA March Madness crew during the pregame show ahead of the Purdue and UConn National Championship game.

Brees, a 2001 Purdue University graduate, spoke about what this season has meant to him and the school.

He said, "It makes us so proud. I think I think we've always prided ourselves on having a great basketball program, one that not only prides herself on skill development, but character and leadership development, and graduating our players."

The Boilermakers are seeking their first title in program history just a year after they...

The New Orleans Saints aren’t widely seen as one of the NFL’s biggest franchises, but team owner Gayle Benson does draw a lot of water in the league’s circles. Dennis Allen's draft history proves one thing about Saints' priorities

  • News source: Darrion Gray

Dennis Allen is entering his third season as the New Orleans Saints head coach. His tenure has proven many things but one of those is his ability to properly identify and address a need, specifically in the NFL draft. Quality of the players is up for debate, however, he’s proven he knows what holes need to be filled. This is noteworthy when predicting the 2024 first-round pick.

Wide receiver was a major issue going into his inaugural season. Sean Payton trusted his offensive acumen, to a fault, to scheme players open. Allen didn’t have the luxury to even be that confident as a defensive...

Tracking New Orleans Saints' official 30 visits before the 2024 NFL draft

  • News source: John Sigler
We’re moving quickly to the start of the 2024 NFL draft, and the New Orleans Saints are already busy flying in draft prospects for official visits at the team headquarters in Metairie. These formal visits are capped at 30 for each team, and we’ll be tracking the reported meetings happening in New Orleans.

There’s a big misconception about the nature of these visits. Fans see them called “Top 30 visits” and assume that teams are bringing in the 30 highest-graded prospects on their board, but that isn’t the case. These are information-gathering visits that mainly center on interviews with the general manager (Mickey Loomis), head coach (Dennis Allen), or college scouting director (Jeff Ireland). The majority of prospects being flown in either come from smaller schools, didn’t complete athletic testing at the combine or their pro day, or have various concerns to be addressed like poor production on-field or off-field behavior.

So while they are noteworthy, it’s not like the Saints are choosing to draft players in the first round based on these visits. They may not draft anyone they’ve met with until the fifth or sixth round. At the same time, every team meets with every prospect either at an all-star game, at the combine, or at their pro day by the time the draft starts. So don’t panic because your favorite prospect isn’t listed here. These meetings are the clearest indicator of interest, so we’ll keep track of who the Saints are hosting in the weeks ahead. Be sure to check this space often:
