Loomis: 'I think we're going to get a really good player'

By John DeShazier - New Orleans Saints

As is the case every year, the possibility that the New Orleans Saints will trade up or down in the first round – or any other round – of the NFL Draft is on the table. But Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis said Tuesday that New Orleans will be comfortable if it remains where it is and makes the 14th pick in the first round.

"Yes," Loomis responded when asked if the Saints could select a quality player at 14. "Yes. I think we're going to get a really good player, yes."

The NFL Draft will be held April 25-27 in Detroit, Mich., with the first round occurring Thursday, the second and third rounds taking place Friday and the fourth through seventh rounds happening Saturday.

Currently, the Saints have the Nos. 14 (first round), 45 (second), 150, 168, 170, 175 (fifth), 190, 199 (sixth) and 239 (seventh) picks. Loomis addressed the media from the Ochsner Sports Performance Center during his predraft news conference. ...

It’s about time: ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that the Heisman Trust will return Reggie Bush’s Heisman Trophy. The former New Orleans Saints running back won that trophy in 2005 after an outstanding three-year run with the USC Trojans, but was forced to forfeit it in 2010 after an NCAA investigation slammed the school for improper recruiting violations.

Thamel adds that an announcement from the Heisman Trust is coming on Wednesday, in which this unprecedented “reinstatement” of Bush’s trophy will be chalked up to “enormous changes in the college football landscape.” Name, image, and...

Good for Reggie Bush. The former New Orleans Saints running back and USC Trojans star will have the Heisman Trophy he won in 2005 returned to him, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, following a yearslong process of “deliberation” at the Heisman Trust. Bush forfeited the Heisman Trophy in 2010 following an investigation into improper recruiting benefits he received during his career at USC from 2003 to 2005.

Bush probably has a lot to say now that he’s won this unprecedented victory. For now, though, all we have is a brief and carefully-worded statement shared with ESPN.

“Personally, I’m thrilled to...

NEW ORLEANS — Former Saints running back Reggie Bush will be getting his Heisman Trophy back, ESPN reported Wednesday morning.

Bush won the Heisman in 2005 with a season that included 1,740 rushing yards, 16 touchdowns along with 37 passes caught for 478 yards and two scores as USC made it to the College Bowl Championship before losing to Texas in one of the greatest games in history.

Bush had the award taken from him after an investigation determined he received "impermissible payments" while playing ball at USC.

ESPN reported Wednesday that the Heisman Trust was expected to return the...

Florida State defensive tackle Braden Fiske met with the New Orleans Saints' defensive line coaches this week. He also met with coaches from the Bills and Cardinals and visited the Raiders, Steelers, and Chargers, per Aaron Wilson.

Braden Fiske is one of the biggest risers in the 2024 NFL Draft. Amazing performances in the Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine allowed this to happen, but that was not the only reason. Fiske showed great performances on game tapes and high character in meetings. He is big, fast, and dominant at defensive tackle, which was shown in his combined measurements. If...

The 2024 NFL draft is just days away, where teams are finalizing their draft boards before things kick off in Detroit on April 25.

There are plenty of storylines to monitor heading into the first round, including how the run of quarterbacks unfolds. At this point, it’s all but official that the Chicago Bears will draft Caleb Williams at first overall. After that, everything’s on the table — what the Washington Commanders decide, quarterback-needy teams looking to move up and teams looking to trade up for other premium talent.

We’re unveiling our seventh and final NFL Wires mock draft of the 2024 offseason. Our editors made player selections for all 32 picks in the first round. Here are the results.

3 years later: Grading the 2021 Saints draft class

We’re closing in on the 2024 NFL draft, which is expected to be a critical juncture for the New Orleans Saints. If they can’t do a good job addressing their most important needs (with the few picks they own at the top of the draft), they’ll risk falling into a hole that’s almost impossible to climb back out of.

Fans saw firsthand how drafting poorly could set the team back in 2021. Lacking a quarterback and depth at wideout during Sean Payton’s last year as head coach (and, effectively, the organization’s top decision-maker) the Saints started their draft with a reach and finished it by rolling the dice on some ill-advised gambles. But they did manage to unearth some young talent along the way.

Conventional wisdom in the NFL says you need three years to thoroughly evaluate a draft class. The Saints’ 2021 crop is entering their fourth year in the pros now, so let’s take a look back and grade each selection:

B/R drafts the Saints ultimate draft class over the last decade

The New Orleans Saints have had on-and-off success over the last eight years in the NFL draft. The hiring of Jeff Ireland coincides with this trend. It’s typically pretty solid with some deathly lows. The second round has arguably been their best round in that time frame. Leave Foskey as TBD and Ireland’s worst second rounder is Pete Werner. That’s a pretty strong hit rate.

As this year’s draft rolls around, Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler took a look at each team’s highs over the last ten years. Fowler formed an ultimate draft class of each team’s best selection from each round over the...
