Frontload washers are environmentally better, but don't clean as well as top loaders. CR says Bosch is the best, but it is pricey. We use a gas-powered dryer.
Consumer Reports says the front load washers are better at cleaning than top loaders.
If you are looking to buy a front loading washer, check you local water company - in some parts of the country you can a substantial rebate (I think mine was $225) because they use so much less water.
