Triplett says Saints Interest in Chris "Beanie" Wells is "Bona Fide"

Maybe our offense really revolved around Deuce and his ability to run the ball. That was the last time we were in the playoffs. Just a thought.

If you are arguing that we need to run the ball more, then I completely agree. I have had it out with other posters on here about our particular "brand" of football. By brand, I mean the predilection to pass, pass, pass. We were a stronger team when we were Deuce was healthy and running the ball. No doubt.

I am contending, though, that we have the piece in place to be an effective running team right now. I am all but convinced if PT was starting last year and being given "starters" carries then about half of the threads on this board would have never existed (Reggie v. PT, Reggie is a bust, PT is Stecker, PT is the man, etc.). I really think he has what it takes to be a quality running back in the league. Maybe I am overshooting it, but I think PT has the capability to make the kind of impact at RB that Marques Colston has had at WR. Both were late round / no round (UFA) and both are playing way past their pay grade.

But even if PT is not the budding star I think he is, his current production at least suggests solid play in the back field. Imagine PT with 100 more carries. I think you have something strong there. That is why I can't stomach drafting Beanie Wells. At best, he is a luxury pick. If Wells is the bruiser that people make him out to be (and he is not-he is a nimble big man), then in order to maximize his talents Payton will have to dramatically shift his philosophy. Payton is a young Andy Reid. As much as I love a bruising running game and think it is a staple for success, I have resigned to the idea that Payton is going to pass more than run. By the way, in 2006 didn't Brees throw for over 4000 yards? I wouldn't call that "revolving" around Deuce.

At worst, I see Wells as another Curtis Enis or Cedric Benson. I said this earlier and, to my surprise, didn't feel the wrath of multitudes of posters. If he turns out to be the megastud that some purport him to be, I won't hesitate in eating crow. I think he is going to have issues with NFL speed, though, and his injuries bother me. If we were hell bent on taking a runningback, I would much prefer Knowshon Moreno because I think he fits our offense more.
